hacer escala

to stop over

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speakers suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Examples:

1: Si compramos este vuelo, tendremos que hacer escala en Houston.

If we buy this flight, we'll have to stop over in Houston.

2:No es un vuelo directo a Ciudad del Cabo. El avión hace escala en Ámsterdam y Johannesburgo.

It's not a direct flight to Cape Town. The plane stops over in Amsterdam and Johannesburg.

Muchos católicos creen que tendrán que hacer escala en el purgatorio antes de que lleguen al cielo.

Many Catholics believe that they have to stop over in purgatory before they get to heaven.

Nunca reservo los vuelos que implican hacer escalas. Prefiero mucho los vuelos directos.

I never book flights that involve a stop-over. I much prefer direct flights.

With correction:

Nunca reservo los vuelos que implican hacer escalas. Prefiero mucho más los vuelos directos.

"prefiero mucho" is not incorrect. Just sounds odd. I would say either "prefiero los..." or "prefiero mucho más los..." if you want to emphasize. - 00fac92a, Aug 15, 2017
thanks mate, very much appreciated. - billygoat, Aug 15, 2017

Para nuestro viaje a Hawái, mi esposa busca un vuelo directo por lo menos para la vuelta, pero no es tan fácil, Kona es un aeropuerto pequeño y Portland no es un centro de conexión importante, y sospecho que vamos a tener que hacer escala en algún lugar.

For our trip to Hawaii, my wife is looking for a direct flight at least for the return, but it is not easy, Kona is a small airport and Portland is not an important hub, and I suspect we are going to have to have a layover somewhere.

I didn't think about how Hawaii is well within range. Of course the two mainland (lower 48) large cities closest are Seattle and Portland. :( - bosquederoble, Aug 15, 2017

Cuando viajaba primera vez a Londres debía hacer escala en Praga, pero olvidé que en este época no existía un vuelo directo de Budapest a Londres o no podía comprar boleto por aquello.

When I first traveled to London I had to stop in Prague, but I forgot that at this time there was no direct flight from Budapest to London or I could not buy a ticket for that.

Sin hacer caso de cuál sea su destinación destino en Alaska, tiene que hacer escala en Anchorage.

No matter what your destination might be in Alaska, you must stop over in Anchorage.

This won't be on my bucket list...unless there's good shopping there. lol - Sassette, Aug 15, 2017
I would like to visit there. :) - rac1, Aug 15, 2017
Sassette, you can buy an ulu knife, walrus ivory carvings, and moose poop earrings (I kid you not!). - AnnRon, Aug 16, 2017
Well, I was thinking about pretty earrings...but made out of moose poop. Ugh! - Sassette, Aug 16, 2017
I didn't even know "destinación" was a word. It sounds so wrong. "destino" it's a lot better. - 00fac92a, Aug 16, 2017
Okay. Thanks, Guillermo. - AnnRon, Aug 16, 2017
Missy, there is some really nice jewelry made in Alaska. Then there is the moose poop kind. :-) - AnnRon, Aug 16, 2017
Guilermo, apparently it isn't a word. I was guessing, not thinking of the word "destino," which I know having watched the series, and I didn't get a red line, so I kept typing. Thanks for setting me straight. - AnnRon, Aug 16, 2017

Casi cada viaje en el interior de Australia puede implica frecuentes hacer escalas para repostar..

Almost every trip in the outback may involve frequent stopovers to refuel.

Traveling in the southern hemisphere involves refueling at a minimum of once before departing to a connecting flight. Los viajes en el hemisferio sur hacen escala a mínimo de una vez que antes de salir a un vuelo de enlace.

No me gustan los vuelos que hacen escalas en medio de la viaje .. porque hay que esperar en el aire pureto por mucho tiempo ..

I don't like the flights that make a stop over in between as one has to wait for a long time in the connecting airport.

(Any help or correction with my Spanish is much appreciated .. thanks in advance. Regards)

La parte más aburrida de un vuelo es hacer escala en un aeropuerto por muchas horas.

The most boring part of a flight is to stop over in an airport for many hours.

Henry lived in England and had planned to travel to Montana for a holiday in the United States and had intended to visit his aunt in Vancouver, Canada 'en route'. He booked the flight and had arranged to make a 'stopover' in Vancouver. What could possibly go wrong, he thought? He should have checked to make sure that she would be 'at home' when he called! Unfortunately she was visiting relatives in England!
