Question

If I wanted to say "He was a teacher for 24 years, but he discovered he could make a lot more money by becoming a coffee farmer" how would I say that? So far I have "Hace 24 años, Jose era un profesor. Pero él descubrió que él podría hacer más dinero con el cultivo de café." I don't know if that is right though. Someone help?

Well, there are some mistakes but it is a good attempt.

José fue profesor durante 24 años pero descubrió que podía hacer/ganar mucho más dinero cultivando café.

The verb hacer is often used in this context. I am a native speaker.

Hi rohit, past simple is used because he is not a teacher any more. Now he is a coffee collector.

And don't forget, we do not use personal subject pronouns

I think you could say:

Jose fue profesor durante veinticuatro años, pero descubrió que podía ganar mucho más dinero cultivando café.

A few pointers for your guidance:

.Hace veinticuatro años = twenty four years ago not for (a period /duration of) 24 years! The word hace by itself means = ago
