Una frase redonda y un número redondo

Una frase redonda y un número redondo

Today I saw a thread about "una frase redonda". There is another expression with this adjective. What is "un número redondo" or "en números redondos". We also use the verb "redondear".

Is there an expression or a verb like this in English?

The verb in English is "to round." Often we say "round up" or "round down." I'm a trillionaire when I round up to the nearest trillion. - jtaniel, Aug 13, 2017

To me, "número redondo" is an approximate quantity, and it is not the same as "redondear un número".

I think an example will help to clarify.

I'd say "Hablando en números redondos, tendríamos alrededor de 5000 unidades.

This would mean that it will be in the neighborhood of 5000 . It could be 4800, 5100, etc.

On the other side, if I say "redondeando", el resultado es 145, it means that the exact result is within 1 unit. It would be, for example, 144.8.

There are two different ways in the method for "redondeo". Some people go to the closest integer, some people just discard the fraction.

When you are just in the middle (8.5) you can go for the lower, the higher of to the even number. You just have to be consistent in what method you pick.

Descartar la fracción. Es la razón del redondeo. - DonBigoteDeLaLancha, Aug 13, 2017
Para redondear, todos tenemos razón. Gracias Guillermo por tu aclaración. - polenta1, Aug 14, 2017

If something is 142.76, it is 140 in round numbers.....or 143 if someone is really picky. Round numbers is an approximation.

"To round" is to establish a figure/number. I believe is is "redondar" in the Spanish. I presume that the methology is the same in all languages, since MATH is universal. Am I wrong?

When a figure gets to ,5, it is "rounded up to the next integer. "1.5" becomes "2". "1,49" is still "1".

The VEF today was at 12.000 something, but not up to 12.500. So, rounded, it was at 12.000. Digo, "rondondado".
