Key to success!

Do you use this expression? a key point meaning something important? If not how else do you say it'Would a Spanish speaking person understand that a picture of a key means something important? If not what other picture could be used'

Clave is used as essential ie needed, required.

Llave is a key as in to unlock a door.
Llave also has many other uses
switch
brace (punctuation mark)
Monkey wrench (LLave Inglesa)
Water tap

i have seen key as both "clave" and "llave." is there any difference between the two at all'
