The famous "Dunce Corner", clearing up a misunderstanding
I think some people might have misunderstood me when I said something about the "dunce corner" on this site, especially on corrections.
There used to be a lovely place, for some a permanent home
, created by lovely-lovely, one of our youngest members on board .
It was a very friendly place where members were sent for "unpardonable" mistakes. It was a place where you could laugh, talk to each other, create your own living area, as some were sent there all the time, jeje, and just pop by to say hi to your old friends, as most of them were still there or had been there at one moment, and that, of course, included me.
It was , of course, not a place to belittle anybody, or to make anybody feel bad about mistakes...it was just a place to have some fun.
Have a look at this search, you will see there is not a single negative impression on the threads, actually, most members had a lot of fun and even asked to be sent there.
There was even an official pardon published at the end of 2010 for those members who had their permanent residence there.
Please take into account , that only members we knew well were sent there, never newbies, however, we sometimes had a question popping up, have a look at the search for dunce corner.
Some of the funniest impressions.

Ok, to directly answer your question amigo, it's figurative place on the forum. It's jokingly used as a place of "punishment". People who are sent to the "Dunce Corner" are not necessarily in trouble or anything. They just made an obvious mistake (probably accidental due to not paying attention) and the members of the forum are jiving them about it. See Q's post for a history of what the word means and it's history

It´s my second home

I want to thank everyone who was SO nice to me while I was in the Dunce Corner. Perhpas I will come back to visit on New Year's Eve and carry out our "new" tradition of eating 12 M&M's at each stroke of the clock at midnight. Special thanks to lovely lovely, amykay, Matt, Gekko and my lawyer, Marianne for sticking with me during my long incarceration. Love you all!
ray76 Dear Echoline , In my time I have been a permanent resident in the dunce corner, the offences have been wide ranging and sometimes of a capital nature,or so it would appear by the length of my incarceration. My advice to you would be to ignore convention ,carry a backpack fill it with chomps and a reasonable quaffing wine, it is also a good idea to smuggle in a friend , I often did , we had good sport. Here we are in one of our more playful moods
ray76 I am in the dunce corner right now. Apparently I was too adventurous with some Spanish phrases, even though I have pleaded ignorance , and also because I am such a shy introverted person how could I be expected to know they were naughty, I promise not to do it again, that is if i know i am doing it which I wont , so please be gentle with me.

There is a nice bathroom there, and there is usually a lot of good food that people bring when they get sent in, so you should be ok.
Special dispensation may be made to walk the dogs, I suppose, and we can furnish you with a microphone so that yo can participate on the chat.
By the way, congratulations! Being sent to the Dunce Corner means that you have become a full-fledged, integral member of the Forum, deserving of all the rights and responsibilities that go with the membership!

I volunteer myself for the new corner.
For: capitalizing months in Spanish
For saying ha plus past participle to refer to myself.
For saying los nueces.
For saying ha rompido.
For whatever other little bids of stupidity I have manifested recently. A little bit of embarrassment helps it stick better.

No worries here Heidi. If there is a "stupid moron closet" or an "ignorant idiot bench" just warn us before sending us there ![]()

I remember you sending me to the Dunce Corner before.
In fact, I sent myself there just the other day for saying "la agua". It looks about the same as it always did. Lol :D
I was just thinking exactly the same thing! I read a comment this morning about the 'Dunce Corner' being a negative thing. Well you couldn't get any further from the truth!!! The Dunce Corner was a wonderful thread and really fun. You have explained it all very well already Heidita - there's not a lot more to add really - except that I really miss the place.
It's our sense of humour. We were not belittling people there - we were having a good time and encouraging each other. I find that I learn much better when I'm having fun and not taking myself too seriously. Anybody can copy and paste from a text book, but to really learn the language you have to experiment with your words/phrases and open yourself up to making some silly mistakes - that way (I feel anyway) you really advance your learning and sound much more natural.
I do agree that you have to be careful though. A newbie making an error would definitely not be sent there. They may well not understand the meaning behind it and think they are being chastised or laughed at. It was the very opposite of that, in truth. You could discuss your errors in a funny and open way. People would chip in with advice and information, you then improved! All done in a fun and caring way.
I never had the pleasure of being in the Dunce Corner :(
I bet it's (was?) a great place to hang out with our mates and exchange dunce stories.
Maybe we should have a re-opening party or something like that.
It would be fun ![]()
Learning a new language, shouldn't be a boring and stressful process, there is enough drama and negativity out there, why bring it here?
Our gracious Queen, aka Heidita, wouldn't send us to suffer in the dungeon.
No way!
She is a kind and sensible queen and our teacher.
She is the heart and soul of this wonderful site just like the great moderators, created to learn and share.
We your humble subjects, we visit cheerfully, the narrow space of this great corner ![]()
