What festivals or traditions do you celebrate in your country in August/summer? Why not post a picture and a description?

I cannot recall a traditional festival in the UK in August, though there are lots earlier in the year. There ia a huge carnival in Nottinghill London started by immigrants from the West Indies, but now the largest in Europe, and a large arts festival in Edinburgh called the Fringe.

Here in my home town (Sheffield) we've had a couple over the past few weeks.

Over the weekend 21-23 July we had the Tramlines Festival. This is a (mainly free) music festival where many pubs and open spaces in the City Centre host bands of varying fame and popularity - from the brand new 'indie' bands to relatively successful commercial bands. It lasts the whole weekend, but as I'm a lightweight these days lol, I could only take Friday night.

Last weekend we had our annual Gay Pride festival. I went to that. Although I'm not gay (just very happy hehehe) I love the atmosphere at this event. Nobody gives a bleep what people think and I find it very relaxing and loving. I like to give my support to my fellow human beings. The only thing that spoilt it was the 'You are all going to burn in hell' people with megaphones trying to intimidate others. But, we forgive them. wink

So, does "estoy gay " mean I am happy but " soy gay " mean I am a gay ? I just don't want to make a mistake. - ray76, Aug 3, 2017
At my age it could be either a tragedy or a travesty ! - ray76, Aug 3, 2017

RAC is a leader .... I am a mere sheep (or rather goat) haha - billygoat, Aug 3, 2017
I remember an eccentric physics teacher who marked our homework one day with a sheep of a goat. The goats had got it wrong and the sheep had blindly copied them. - Mardle, Aug 3, 2017
hahaha Pat, that's very apt in my case! - billygoat, Aug 3, 2017

Festival???

My birthday party. LOL and my brother's birthday.
August is winter here.
My parents and many people say:

Agosto es angosto.
There is little money. It's not the beginning of winter so people don't buy winter clothes anymore because spring is coming in September. There is no bonus or aguinaldo, which we have in June and December etc.

"Agosto es angosto "and incredibly my parents had two parties the same "angosto" month. jaja

This teaches us a lesson:
Plan your child's birth month. lol lol lol

In the Basque Country summer is the season when the most important festivities are celebrated. From the smallest village to the biggest city they all have their patron saint festvities and other paralel festivals. It would be impossible for me to list them all so I am going to talk about the most important festival of my city, Bilbao, it is called "aste nagusia" literally "main week" but translated to Spanish as "semana grande". This festival is represented by a figure called Marijaia (Maria-fiesta Mary-party)

Here's a link to the Bilbao council web if there is someone interested in

Aste nagusia

I didn't know you were from Bilbao. I saw the huge posters especially outside the theatre for the August festival and was told when I visited it was a little quiet as something had just finished. - Mardle, Aug 3, 2017

The usual summer tradition here in Chicago was watching the Cubs lose. Happily, we broke that 108 year tradition last year when we won the World Series!

My mother spent several years working in Malta and said particularly in the summer there were lots of festivals linked with saints to various villages. The article I first posted was by various journalists remembering fiestas they knew in their home towns.

Many years ago, I visited Brussels with my mum. She was celebrating her birthday and we stayed at a convent in Brussels where her sister was a nun. It was at this time of the year. I remember we went to the centre of Brussels where they had sketched a pattern for a floral carpet. The next day we saw thousands of plants, mainly begonias whose flowers were used in a carpet. The glorious carpet was on show for the assumption of the Virgin Mary which is not a holiday in the UK or surprisingly Eire but is throughout much of Europe.

And here is an article in Spanish with some good photos about the last carpet. It is completed every two years.
