Question

Making a Spanish phone prompt for my employer... Which verb should be used ¿oprimir or marcar? "OPRIMA el numer dos" OR "MARQUé el numero dos" I know both are basically the same, and I've heard both used...but is one more professional than the other??

Oprimir has the same root as opression, it implies pressure with your finger.
Presionar is like to press.
Marcar is to "mark" used as to dial.
Discar is to dial.

All of them could be used and understood. None of them is colloquial, maybe in fact "discar" in itself isn't what we do now because we don't have a "disk" anymore but we press.

Presionar or marcar could be the best probably.

I think this usage is regional. In Mexico generally we say marcar to indicate the entire phone number, ie: Marque el 525- 78-29.

To indicate one digit we say oprimir, ie: Para español oprima el número uno, para inglés oprima el número dos.

Discar!!!??? ¿Eso qué es?

I will state that Julian is right with oprimir for Oregon. Anything I call that says push 2 for Spanish uses it (para continuar en español, oprima.dos) If I remember correctly. :) - bosquederoble, Aug 2, 2017

Marcar is common to push numbers on a phone than oprima.

• Marque el número dos para escuchar en español. Press number two for Spanish.
• Marqué equivocado y volví a llamar. I dialed the wrong number and called again.
