Subjunctive with Suponer?

Subjunctive with Suponer?

If I want to say that I had assumed something that I now know is false, do I use the subjunctive?

Ex. "Había supuesto que ellos fueran / eran ricos, pero ahora sé que no es verdad."

Thank you!

As you probably know, suponer, like creer takes the indicative in the positive and with No suponer and no creer they take the subjunctive.

Here you are saying what you used to suppose/believe/think so that should go in the indicative and you are declaring that you now know is is not true, which should also use the indicative.

I am not a native speaker so there is a chance I am wrong about this subtlety.

From your point of view, Elefantita, you assumed that they were rich so it is the indicative, regardless of what you may have learned later.

Elefantita, it would sound more natural to say:

Suponía que eran ricos.

había supuesto....that sounds quite odd.
