False friends, bland, blando

Why are bland in English and blando in Spanish false friends?
I would appreciate some examples.
I don't know why but I see "cognates" or "false friends" everywhere while in books they always mention the same.

La comida era blanda e insulsa.
The food was mushy and bland.
Aquí uso "mushy" para significar "blanda", y "insulsa" para significar "bland".
