ají ( ah-HEE )

(noun) chili, chili sauce

Welcome to La Palabra Del Día

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speakers suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Examples:

1: ¿Le echaste ají al pollo?

Did you add chili to the chicken?

2: El ají que probamos en Quito estuvo riquísimo.

The chili sauce we tried in Quito was delicious.

En Estados Unidos, muchas marcas de ají tienen nombres raros.

In the US, many brands of chili sauce have funny names.

Muchas veces el ají contiene mucho ajo.

Many times chile contains a lot of garlic.

Ten cuidado con el ají , porque es muy sabroso, pero peligroso también , porque puede poner en peligro la membrana mucosa del estómago.

Be careful with the chili, because it is very tasty, but dangerous too, because it may endanger the mucous membrane of the stomach.

Parece que el ají no solo añade un sabor maravilloso a la comida, sino que también puede mejorar la salud. Lo que es bueno, como tanto a mi esposa como a mí nos gusta cocinar con los ajís.

It seems hot peppers not only add a wonderful flavor to food, but also can improve health. Which is good, as both my wife and I like to cook with them.

To make bittersweet appetisers, peel and chop an avocado. Leave it unsweetened. Flavour it by soaking in a mortar of salty hot sauce. Add chilli. Nibble a spoonful. Savour the exquisite sour aftertaste. Delicious.

Para hacer los entremeses agridulces, pela y pica un aguacate. Dejalo amargo. Aromatizalo por impregnalo con picante salado en un molcajete. Añade ají. Mordisquea una cucharada. Saborea el exquisito retrogusto amargo. ¡Sabroso!

Baked beans taste bland without chili. Los frijoles al horno saben soso sin ají.

Un poco de ají es sabroso pero demasiado de ají es imposible de comer.

A little chili is tasty but too much chili is impossible to eat.
