The - erías ….how many do we know?

The - erías ….how many do we know?

Many shops and other places have names that end with “ería” in Spanish.

Of course there are other ería words but we are not interested in those here.

How many can we find? ¿Cuántos podemos encontrar?

Example:

Ferretería

No, a ferretería it is not where you buy ferrets.

Una ferretería is a hardware store.

Only one entry at a time and please write a sentence in Spanish and English.

I bought my bedroom furniture at "The Reasonable Price" furniture store.

We can still remember old-fashioned names of stores. How different from now!!

"La Confianza"
"El Precio Bajo"
"Los Dos Hermanos"
"Las Tres Esquinas"
"Ciudad de París"
"La Sirenita"
"Tienda del Pueblo"
"Espiga de Oro"
"La Sin Rivall"
"Rodríguez Hermanos"
etc. etc. etc.

I walked into the ferret shop looking for a hamster, and they looked at me as if I were crazy. ‘You have to go to the hamster shop.’”.

Alpargatería

It's a store where they sell alpargatas or "espadrilles". Nowadays there are few "alpargaterías" because some of low quality are sold everywhere, even in supermarkets. Besides, some "alpargatas" or great design can be sold even in the best shoestores.

Herboristería or yuyería

They are stores that sell herbs or also herbal teas. The term used nowadays tends to be more "herboristería" because it seems more scientific.

This time I can't translate those names. In fact I don't even know them in Spanish so much. Many people use them a lot. They say it's "natural medicine" and prefer them to chemical products of orthodox western medicine.

I've heard about tilo, marcela, boldo, carqueja, cedrón, diente de león, malva, manzanilla etc. I sometimes use tilo for inhalation when I have a cold this is called vahos in Spanish. Vahos are even recommended by doctors although you can use only water too. I like tilo because it soothes you.

Papelería

Papelería is a store where they sell notebooks, pencils, pens, ballpoint pens, erasers, rubbers, dusters, chalk, sharpeners, papaer sheets, drawing sheets, color pencils, markers, whiteboards etc. I think it's stationary store.

By the way, we used to call "cuadernos" to notebooks or copybooks when I was a kid. B ut in the last few decades they call "cuadernolas" those notebooks that are much bigger than the older notebooks, maybe like 50% bigger in width and length not in number of pages. How do you call these "cuadernolas " in English?

Sastrería

Tailor shop or a store where they sell suits, pants and other clothes for men. It seems it's a little old-fashioned today. "Sastrerías" was the name in former times. Now they call shops selling jeans, shirts, sweaters etc for men "jeanerías" pronounced "yinerías " in Spanish.

Sorry I have to go now.

The toy stores are crowded the 5th of January because the 6th is "Reyes"..

Los Reyes or Reyes Magos are three characters of the Bible that brought presents to Jesus when he was born, especially frankincense and myrrh. Parents, relatives and friends buy presents for children on the 6th in remembrance of this. The best present is usually a toy. I think you call them "The Magi" in English.
