- Quiero ser inteligente. I want to be intelligent.
- Quieren ser ricos. They want to be rich.
¿Así?
In English we would typically say things differently if the situation is contrary to current fact, particularly if the possibility is remote.
I wish I were rich.
I'm not rich, and I'm not too sure if I ever will be, but it would be nice if I were.
Quiero ser rico.
I want to be rich. (and I have a solid plan to make this happen)
Me gustaría si fuera rico. (this has two subjects in Spanish)
Quisiera ser rico. (this has only one subject in Spanish)
I would like to be rich.
Ojalá que yo fuera rico. (Ojalá fuera rico.)
I wish I were rich. (this can have a past, present or future meaning depending on context)
Please correct my Spanish if necessary. I wanted to use que + past subjunctive with quisiera in this situation. (contrary to fact and remote possibility,) but it is my understanding, that without a change of subject it would be unusual, and perhaps wrong.
