entremés ( ehn-treh-MES )

(noun) appetizer, hors d'oeuvre

Welcome to La Palabra Del Día

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speakers suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Examples:

1: Lo mejor de la cena fue el entremés.

The best part of the dinner was the appetizer.

2: Los entremeses que sirvieron en la boda eran buenísimos.

The hors d'oeuvres they served at the wedding were delicious.

Si la infancia es el entremés, supongo que la tercera edad es el postre.

If childhood is the appetizer, I suppose that old age is the dessert.

Ya que no sé como cocinar, mi vida culinaria consiste de un suministro interminable que entremeses

Since I don't know how to cook, my culinary life consists of an endless supply of appetizers.

I'm interested for a native to chime in on the use of "desde" in this sentence. I'm not sure but I've never heard it used in this context. It sounds to me like you used to know how to cook but don't anymore though you mean to say "Como no sé cocinar - alba3, Jul 6, 2017
Si, yo diria "Como no sé cocinar" y "de entremeses". - 00376109, Jul 6, 2017
"Ya que" is a better expression for "since" in this instance. - Daniela2041, Jul 6, 2017
Thank you all so much for the correction. I really appreciate it! - Echoline, Jul 6, 2017

Appetizers in a restaurant menu consist of bread, salad or soup. Los entremeses en un menú de restaurante consisten de pan, ensalada o sopa.

HI ann, please do me the favour and post your answer on the forum as a separate question, interesting discussion, you will see - 006595c6, Jul 6, 2017
Heidita: Maybe "do me the favour" is common British English. In the U.S. we would say "do me A favor and" No biggie. - DilKen, Jul 6, 2017
With a little more formality Americans might occasionally say Would you do me the favor of posting.... In this case, we would couple "the favor" with "of." - DilKen, Jul 7, 2017

Si tienes mucha hambre hay que ordenar entremeses. Si no, te vas a morir de hambre esperando en este restaurante.

If you're really hungry you should order an appetizer. If not, you're going to starve to death waiting in this restaurant.

Cuando como demasiados entremeses antes de la comida principal. Nunca acabo con toda mi comida.

When I eat too many appetisers before my main meal. I never finish the whole meal.

Un buen entremés debe tener buen sabor porque de lo contrario no merece el la pena tenerlo pedirlo.

Even better:

Unos buenos entremeses...

A good appetizer must taste good or else it is not worth having. it.

Thanks Ray and Heidita for corrections. smile

Si has sido invitado a una boda de la alta sociedad procura comer tantos entremeses como puedas , porque inmediatamente después se serviran los postres.

If you have been invited to a high society wedding try to eat as many appetizers as you can, because inmediately after them the desserts will be served.

En los teatros a menudo juegan una obra corta insertada entre actos y eso es un entremés o sea una pieza teatral breve.

In theaters they often play a short drama inserted between acts and that is a short play i.e. an interlude.

It is almost same for the appetizer and food, the village children want to eat, that's it.

Es mismo para el entremés y la comida, los niños del pueblo quiero comer, ya hasta.
