A special use of "dar" in Spanish.

A special use of "dar" in Spanish.

While going over a thread of the "word of the day" I realized there was a mistake. It's about a use of "dar" instead of the English word "make" At least the verb "give" isn't used in English.

Comer cosas saladas me da sed. Eating salty things makes me thirsty. Put these words into the blanks:

Polenta:

You're right, in most these particular situations, we wouldn't use the word give in English. I think this is because in most of these situations we would use an adjective instead of a noun. However, English uses "to give" pretty much the same way (with nouns) in:

Drinking too much red wine gives me a headache.

Yelling so much at the baseball game gave me a sore throat.

Watching a scary movie sometimes gives me the chills.

The greater use of dar in Spanish versus "to give" in English seems to be the same phenomena as using "tener" vs "to be" for many of these things.

Tengo calor. vs. I am hot.
Tengo sed. vs. I'm thirsty.
Tengo miedo vs. I'm scared.

Thanks for an interesting post.

Saludos, Ken
