agrio ( AH-gryoh )

(adjective) sour, tart

Welcome to La Palabra Del Día

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speakers suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

La etimología de “vinagre” es de las palabras romana por “vino”+”agrio”.

The etymology of vinegar comes from the Roman words for “wine” + “sour”.

Acabo de darme cuenta de que las palabras 'agrio' y 'dulce' son juntadas para construir la palabra 'agridulce'. Pero me pregunto por qué no incluye la letra 'o' tambíen :-s

I have just realised that the words 'sour' and 'sweet' are joined together to form the word 'sweet-and-sour'. But I wonder why it doesn't include the letter 'o' also.

With correction:

Me pregunto por qué algunas personas caminan con esas expresiones agrias en los rostros. (I think "amargas" would work better in this sentence, but is "agrias" incorrect in this context? If it's wrong, I'll write another sentence.)

I wonder why some people walk around with such sour looks on their faces.

A una amiga de mi esposa le encantan las cervezas agrias, y aunque prefiero las oscuras o las IPAs muy amargas (con concentraciones altas de lúpulos), sí, disfruto tomándolas con ella.

A friend of my wife loves sour beers, and although I prefer dark ones or very bitter IPAs (with high hop concentrations), indeed I enjoy drinking them with her.
