For me, fireworks are an essential part of the Fourth of July experience.

Thanks, Ambette. This is one of my favorite pictures that I've taken. I was so close to the action I felt some of the firework debris fall on me. - Sassette, Jul 1, 2017
You took that? Wow! I guess I should have known since it's labeled "missy photography." Good work! - AnnRon, Jul 1, 2017
Thanks so much, Ann! Indeed the missy photography indicates that I took this wonderful picture. - Sassette, Jul 2, 2017

I enjoy seeing kids take part in holiday parades now that I don't have to organize them.

For me the fourth of July has always been the holiday that I can count on for recovering the day after my wedding anniversary, to relax and cook something on the barbecue. But in the future it might be the birthday of my first grandchild, I still don't know, but only a few contractions so far. My wife likes to celebrate it more because she is an immigrant and took a test to be a citizen (she was born in England like my mother) despite the fact that this is her favorite comic at the moment.

That cartoon is worth two votes. :-) - AnnRon, Jul 1, 2017
Since I can't give you two votes for the cartoon I'll go ahead with this: lol lol - Sassette, Jul 2, 2017
I think that this day should be about patriotism and thanksgiving, not partisanship. - Echoline, Jul 2, 2017
We're all thankful for the freedom we've enjoyed all these years, Echoline. - AnnRon, Jul 2, 2017
I will admit for my sven plus years in the us navy, I made my deductions to the ACLU and Amnesty International, and I will admit that I am grateful to live in a country that allowed me to deduct payments to those charities directly from my Navy pacycheck - bosquederoble, Jul 2, 2017
It's hard to ignore the political environment we're in but on July 4th, unless there's big news, there will be more focus on holiday activities and the spirit that has been conveyed on this thread.:) - Sassette, Jul 2, 2017
Thank you for your service, bosquederobl. It is a blessing that we live in a country where we are all free to express our opinions, but so sad that there is such a toxic environment right now that political differences are getting in the way of personal - Echoline, Jul 2, 2017
relationships. I think that everyone has a part in either stoking the fire or encouraging civil discorse between divergent political views. - Echoline, Jul 2, 2017
I think the right we all have to push for what we believe is right for the country instead of being dictated to is an important part of what we are celebrating. - bosquederoble, Jul 2, 2017
But in the end we have to come to a compromise, and the current pattern of refusing anything thought up by the other side, or that is anything less than fully what one wants leads to a failure of governance. - bosquederoble, Jul 2, 2017
We manage to have friends and relatives with very different opinions than ours by respecting the rights to disagree. :) - bosquederoble, Jul 2, 2017
@ Echoline, the cartoon is not about partisanship but just one bufoon in the white house. Bosquederoble has the right to express his opinion, the right that Agent Orange wants to take away - 005faa61, Jul 2, 2017
Censorship of political opinion is now most frequently demonstrated on political campuses by forces opposed to the current duly elected President of the USA... even though partisan - the cartoon's funny& he's right about respecting rights of friends... - Esteban_317, Jul 3, 2017
I was a very active member on this forum for many years, and have just returned. There was always a policy at SD to avoid politics and stick to learning Spanish. I am not disclosing my personal political beliefs, nor do I plan to. - Echoline, Jul 3, 2017
I find it amazing that I am getting flamed as trying to stop freedom of speech when my only aim was to try to make the forum feel like a welcoming place for everyone. If times have changed this much here and you want me to go away, I can. - Echoline, Jul 3, 2017
Our community is made up of folks whose personal political beliefs range from far left to far right and everything in between and folks who grew up or live under all different types of government systems. - Echoline, Jul 3, 2017
What we all had in common was a sincere desire to help each other learn. - Echoline, Jul 3, 2017
The freedom we have to be ourselves, and the tradition of accepting those that are not like us, is to me one of the great American values, since the day we had puritan, anglican, quaker and catholic states to now. - bosquederoble, Jul 3, 2017
That ability to express our opinions is all that I wanted to celebrate. I generally am not near as expressive of my views as I could be, and I did not think I was being that outrageous. Apparently I was wrong. - bosquederoble, Jul 3, 2017
It is true that we are to keep political and religious comments to a minimum. There is no demand that we not address these issues at all. We're just supposed to be classy about it and in my opinion bosque's entry is very classy and well within the rules. - Sassette, Jul 3, 2017
If SD goes to the extreme and bans everything political and religious and reduces us to make project like say this bicycle is red in Spanish and English people would turn away from s - Sassette, Jul 3, 2017
I agree with Sassette and the cartoon reflects that the unfortunate situation in the US is not about politics but about a completely unfit occupant of the office of president, which has been expressed by officials of both parties - 005faa61, Jul 3, 2017
As an otsider may I just say that it is important to forget the M A N , and R E S P E C T the office of "President " if you lose that respect then you lose your loyalty to the office and the flag. - ray76, Jul 3, 2017
Ray, I still have respect for the Office of President but believe that Trump is bringing dishonour to his office /position the longer that he remains in office! - FELIZ77, Jul 3, 2017
When will the moderate republicans acknowledge that he is becoming a liability to his party, and to the USA? - FELIZ77, Jul 3, 2017
I agree with Julian's comment above! :) - FELIZ77, Jul 3, 2017
Sorrry Feliz & Julian but it those particular type of remarks that I believe Echoline is referring too. 31 states voted in President Trump. Your remarks reflect on All who voted to avoid Hillary's flaws. Let's study Spanish publicly ± > politics! - Esteban_317, Jul 3, 2017
I agree with Julian and Feliz. Neither candidate was popular; there are enough Americans concerned about the president's behavior. For those on here who like Trump I see no signs that they are not loved here. If you want to see rough, go on YouTube. - Sassette, Jul 3, 2017
My goal was not to start a battle over Trump, only to point out that you can still love your country without agreeing with everything it does. Perhaps I should ask to have this post deleted due to the emotions it seems to have stirred up. - bosquederoble, Jul 3, 2017

Independence Day celebrations are important to Latin "Americans" whether they were born here or are naturalized citizens.

The local parade goes past my house. I enjoy the horses and can hear the band music in our living room.

Don't forget the Revolutionary War which followed our Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776. A lot of people died to get us free from the evil British government of that Day and King George VI. - Daniela2041, Jul 3, 2017
My ancestors were sent to this penal colony as a perpetual reminder , but it backfired on them because we grew up to beat the crap out of them at cricket , well mostly anyway , but we still love them and you . - ray76, Jul 3, 2017
Thanks for your remarks Ray. The Japanese in bombing Darwin, showed they wanted the rich resources of Australia. The US Navy, Marines and Army reinforced the peoples of the Pacific to help them restore or defend their liberty. (see link below for > info) - Esteban_317, Jul 3, 2017
http://www.australia.gov.au/about-australia/australian-story/japanese-bombing-of-darwin ►I take particular interest too since Dad was in the last four battles you listed. He remained active in the US Naval Reserves, until his death in 1968. - Esteban_317, Jul 3, 2017
We have just celebrated the "Battle of the Coral Sea" And a large contingent of U S Marines are now on exercise with our Navies in the Pacific as we speak , the Marines have a permanent contingent stationed in Darwin now. - ray76, Jul 3, 2017
My grandsons operated with the U S in Iraq and Afghanistan . - ray76, Jul 3, 2017
Hi Esteban the father of my stepdaughter was in the U S Marines and fought in those places , he was wounded in Guadalcanal , and was hospitalised in Melbourne , marrying a Melbourne girl . - ray76, Jul 3, 2017
My dad served on the USS Tangier - a seaplane tender during the Battlesof Pearl Harbor, the aborted reinforcement of Wake Is., the Battle of the Coral Sea & Midway. Also involved on shore in reoccupation of The Philippines. Glad to hear of the celebration - Esteban_317, Jul 3, 2017
Hearing of your stepdaughter's parentage helps me better understand our common bond. - Esteban_317, Jul 3, 2017
They had a son born in Melbourne and the girl born in New York , they came back to Melbourne divorced and I took over , the girl now lives 6 months in Spain and 6 months in Ireland , and occasional visit to her son who lives in Melbourne ,he is a builder - ray76, Jul 3, 2017
