Game: One letter changes all !

Question

This is a bit of an exercise in vocabulary both English and Spanish.

Some words are often misspelled and have a completely different meaning.

Let's take these:

through - trough (a trevés - abrevadero).

lie - lye (mentira - lejía).

I would like you to write a pair of English or Spanish words that are almost identical except for one letter. Next to it please write the most common Spanish/English meaning.

I'm looking for examples like the above, where the words can be easily confused. Pairs like "train - rain" are not as much fun.

If you can think of Spanish words that work the same way, by all means go ahead and write the Spanish pair, with the English meaning next to them!

This is one I often muddle when in my local Spanish restaurant, even though they do not serve horse!

caballo horse, knight - chess piece + slang - heroin

Incidentally we use the phrase 'mackerel sky' for the pattern that looks like the fish, whereas the Spanish use ' cielo aborregado' which means sheep like

He hid from the cops in a copse of pine trees.

Real- verdadero

Reel- carrete, etc.

Him - pronombre objeto él

hymn - himno

Le cantó un himno.

She sang a hymn to him. (maybe better "for him?")

You can have either. To him either means it was in praise of him or she was physically singing it to him is in the same room. For is a more general meaning can be on his behalf or to please him and he could be present or somewhere else - Mardle, Jul 3, 2017

"She sang him a hymn" might be the most common, but "she sang a hymn for him" and "she sang a hymn to him" both sound to me like natural, acceptable English. :) - bosquederoble, Jul 3, 2017
