In the following sentence, why is sufriera in the subjunctive?

Era casi un retrato hablado de Ibrahimovic. Sin embargo, la lesión que sufriera hace unos meses el ex jugador del París Saint-Germain y el Barcelona, complicó los planes galácticos.

It's better to use "sufrió" but you can sometimes hear "sufriera".

I suppose it's.
La lesión que sufra el jugador, complicará las cosas. (subj. and it's an eventual future)

La lesión que sufriera el jugador, complicaría las cosas. (subj. past and conditional)

This sounds like a "sequence of tenses" .
If I have present subjunctive and future, I have past subjunctive and conditional.

This would be an eventual situation in the future. And the second an eventual "future" situation in the past. Anyway the preterite or past is better if you are certain it happened. Then sufrió.

That's what I want to know. Subjunctive is odd here.

He either suffered an injury or he didn't.

La lesión que sufrió hace .....

Both are correct though...it is odd, but not unheard off.

Actually you get over 10000 hits on this usage.

yeah, that's my problem cause the injury definitely happened. - isijder, Jun 25, 2017
