I've read the link that NKM1974 posted with interest.

Just recently, I asked a waitress at a restaurant in the Dominican Republic (after an enjoyable meal) whether I should say "la comida estuvo deliciosa", or "la comida fue deliciosa". Her response was that I should use "estuvo" in this context, i.e. estar and preterit.

I don't know if that helps or hinders the debate, but the one thing I am sure of is that all this talk of food has made me hungry.
