Why is "lo" used here?

In the sentence, "La misión de Vidal es acabar con los últimos vestigios de la resistencia republicana, escondida en lo montes de la zona", I presume "lo" means "the" but why? I understand in abstract cases like "lo bueno es" ("the good thing is"), but why here?

It should be "los". It's a definite article, masculine and plural.

That is actually a mistake, maybe a typo. It should be "los".

I think it's "en los montes" because it's a plural. - NKM1974, Jun 21, 2017
