caracol ( kah-rah-KOHL )

(noun) seashell; snail

Welcome to La Palabra Del Día

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speakers suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Such a cute little girl! However, I never heard of caracol to name curls on the head. That's new to me. = ) - Gloriange, Jun 15, 2017
I've not heard of it either. - rac1, Jun 15, 2017
Well it was new to me too. But to be fair, so were the shell and snail definitions :) Have a look at definition 4 in the SD dictionary entry (Amber's Word of the Day link above). - jellonz, Jun 15, 2017
Same here. It also mentioned (rizo) curl on Collins Dictionary entry. - NKM1974, Jun 15, 2017
I'm not saying it's wrong at all; just that I have not heard it. - rac1, Jun 15, 2017
That's cool. I'm always looking for different uses for the word of the day :-)! - Jraider, Jun 15, 2017
It might not be used much Amber, if Gloriange (as a native speaker) has never heard of it. Still, in English we do have ponytails, beehives, pigtails, and duck's a***s, so I guess association makes sense at least :) - jellonz, Jun 15, 2017

My first trip to another country was to France near Bordeaux where I had my first oysters and snails and wine. And my love of travel.

Mi primer viaje a otro país fue a Francia, cerca de Burdeos, donde tuve mis primeras ostras y caracoles y vino. Y me enamoré de viajar

Yo también :-)! - Jraider, Jun 15, 2017
I liked that ...had a love of... Can of be replaced by for as in had a love for travel? - Gloriange, Jun 15, 2017
To have when talking about food can be translated as: Consumir or comer. That means that the verb for travel must be changed by maybe me enamoré de los viajes. - Gloriange, Jun 15, 2017
or me enamoré de viajar. - Gloriange, Jun 15, 2017

Aunque como muchos tipos de moluscos, más específicamente de los cefalópodos y de los bivalvos, jamás comeré un gasterópodo, porque para mí los caracoles simplemente son babosas con concha, y me dan asco.

Although I eat many types of mollusks, more specifically of cephalopods and of bivalves, I will never ever eat a gastropod, because to me snails are simply slugs with shells, and they disgust me.

When African snails appeared in the city, authorities warned people from touching them and asked to immediately call environmental authorities.

Cuando aparecieron los caracoles africanos en la ciudad, las autoridades alertaron a la gente sobre no tocarlos y pidieron que llamaran a las autoridades ambientales de inmediato.

"warned people against touching them" or "warned people not to touch them". "and asked them to immediately call" or "asked that they immediately call". :) - bosquederoble, Jun 15, 2017
I thought the verb warn was always followed by from. Thanks bosquederobl for your correction. - Gloriange, Jun 15, 2017

Hay cierto caracol, llamado "escargot" en francés que servimos en el restaurante en donde trabajaba hace años. Los sacamos de la cáscara, los preparamos con ajo, mantequilla, e hierbas antes de servirlos a los comensuales

Hola Nkm: "And" should either be omitted or replaced with "that is." Also "an hor d'oeuvre" or "hor d'oeuvres" - jellonz, Jun 14, 2017
This is the correct spelling for hors d'oeuvre. I incorporated so many French words. - NKM1974, Jun 14, 2017
Yep. Spelling is fine Nkm. The only error was that in this sentence the singular "hor d'oeuvre" requires an indefinite article, whereas the plural "hor d'oeuvres" does not. - jellonz, Jun 15, 2017
Jellonz, I believe that both the singular and the plural have "hors," not "hor." - AnnRon, Jun 15, 2017
Oh, der. Sorry Nkm. I was so busy looking at the end your second word I neglected the end of my first. Both you and Ann are of course correct :) - jellonz, Jun 15, 2017

Los caracoles de ajo son una delicadeza francesa.

Garlic snails are a French delicacy.

In French cuisine, the snails are typically purged, killed, removed from their shells, and cooked (usually with garlic butter, chicken soup or wine), and then placed back into the shells with the butter and sauce for serving. Additional ingredients may be added, such as garlic, thyme, parsley and pine nuts.
