When a word ends in a vowel, you add "s" to make it plural.

hombre---hombres libro libros.

If the word ends in a consonant, ex. "r' "s" "z" ect. you add "es" even if the word already end in "es"

Ex. Mujer---mujeres, Pared----paredes. País----países.

With "lápices" there is the additional problem of a spelling change. The original "z" changes to "c" before adding the "es" So it's "lápiz."

All words ending in "z" will have this spelling change.

There are a few exceptions to these rules, but not to worry about. You won't encounter them for a long while.
