(noun) fin

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speakers suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Las tablas de surfing tienen aletas para ayudar el surfista montar en las olas. Actualmente muchas tablas tienen tres aletas, aunque no todos.

Surfboards have fins to help the surfer ride the waves. These days many boards have three fins, though not all.

No me gustan las aletas cuando voy a bucear , son algo extra en para llevar dentro y fuera del agua.

I do not like fins when I go diving, they are something extra to carry in and out of the water.

The fins are a locomotion of fish. Las aletas son una locomoción del pez.

Ya - rac1, Jun 9, 2017
The subject of the English sentence is "locomotion," so the verb would have to be "is" to agree with the singular subject. You could turn it around and use "fins" as the subject, and then the verb would be "are." - AnnRon, Jun 9, 2017
Thank you! The fins are a... has a noun & verb. - NKM1974, Jun 9, 2017
It's either, "the fins are, or the fin is." - rac1, Jun 9, 2017

Estoy de acuerdo con Ray, nunca uso aletas cuando bucear con esnórquel -no son necesarias- nado por horas sin regresar a la orilla, y aunque sí podría nadar más rápido con aletas, normalmente quiero nadar lentamente para ver los peces y no asustarlos.

I agree with Ray, I never use fins when I snorkel- they are not needed- I swim for hours without returning to the shore, and I although yes I could swim faster with fins, I normally want to swim slowly to see the fish and not scare them.
