I want to ask ¿Piensas que es importante ayudar a los demás? in the formal way, how do I do this?

Simply change pensar to formal you: ¿Piensa (ud.) que ............?
I would also use subjunctive for ser (sea), but this is a matter of nuance. The way you have written it with es is grammatically correct.
