nevera ( neh-BEH-rah )

(noun) cooler

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speakers suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Examples:

1: Llevamos en una nevera los peces que atrapamos en el río.

We brought home the fish we caught in the river in a cooler.

2: Si no traes una nevera, puedes enfriar los refrescos metiéndolos en el mar.

If you don't have a cooler, you can always put the sodas in the ocean to get cold.

La nevera para casas fue inventada en el siglo veinte. Actualmente en el primer mundo practicamente cada casa tiene una.

The home refrigerator was invented in the twentieth century. Nowadays in the first world practically every home has one.

Was it like the ones we have today, basically? - rac1, Jun 6, 2017
I don't think it had a freezer section - mstivers, Jun 6, 2017

Después de que el poder en la ciudad cerró se apagó el invierno pasado, la casa parecía más como una nevera. enter image description here

Esteban: Después - then. For after - Después de que el poder. I would have used se apagó instead of cerró. Just my two cents. Cerró might be OK also but I think of that as an intentional closing or shutting off. - DilKen, Jun 6, 2017
Actually both happened last year - once power was shut off intentionally to make repairs that were to prevent long outages. Later, two long - interruptions of power occurred after strong winds. - Esteban_317, Jun 6, 2017
Hola Jraider, Ray & Amber. Thanks DilK. - - Esteban_317, Jun 6, 2017

En Nueva Zelanda llamamos las neveras "chilly bins" y las tomamos en todas partes.

In New Zealand we call coolers "chilly bins" and we take them everywhere.enter image description here

Sure am Amber :) We love our chilly bins. I have about 6. My big one, my little one, my mid size one, my high one ... etc. Still lacking one with a motor though. - jellonz, Jun 6, 2017
That is a great phrase!! I love SpanishDict because I learn so much more than just Spanish. - mstivers, Jun 6, 2017
I do too, Mstivers. :) - rac1, Jun 6, 2017
Wow! What a cool unit :-)! - Jraider, Jun 6, 2017
Jellonz: you could put a lot of shrimp in there to take them to the barbie :) - DilKen, Jun 6, 2017
Speaking about shrimp, I could really go for some hot, boiled crayfish right now. Yummy! - rac1, Jun 6, 2017
Yep. They're great fun JR. A mate of mine had one at a do a while back. They get a bit treacherous after a few bevies though :) - jellonz, Jun 6, 2017
Ha. That's the Ozzies Ken. I'm sure Ray will have thrown many a prawn on the barby. We're more into old fashioned sausies, wild pork or venison if we're lucky :) - jellonz, Jun 6, 2017
And we love our crays too Amber. Somebody normally shows up with a couple or at least some paua (abalone) patties. Ah ... roll on summer. - jellonz, Jun 6, 2017

The cold temperature in a refrigerator lasts longer than an icebox. La temperatura fría en el frigorífico es duradero que la nevera.

No se hace mucho más chulo que Chris Janson que está de pie sobre una nevera.
It doesn't get much cooler than Chris Janson standing on a cooler.

The closest "city" is 80 miles away. The closest honest-to-goodness city is 220 miles away. The cooler is for bringing home the groceries, not for taking food to eat on the trip. :-) - AnnRon, Jun 6, 2017
Somehow, the cooler doesn't look big enough for the cold things. - rac1, Jun 6, 2017

Una nevera es un esencial para la vida afuera, las barbacoas, las picnics o el camping. En Australia siempre se llama una '"Esky", que es una marca de fábrica.

Cuando la nevera no fue inventado la gente hacía pozos de hielo y allí afanaba preservar los alimentos perecederos.

When the refrigerator was not invented people made ice wells and there tried to preserve the perishable foods.

Recuerdo cuando una nevera era una caja que contiene hielo.

La próxima vez que estés solo en una fiesta y te aburras, deberías meter la mano en la nevera para ver si pudieras encontrar un compañero para divertirte.

The next time you are alone at a party and get bored, you should reach into the cooler to see if you can find a companion to entertain you.

At the end of the commercial, another woman goes to the cooler, and tries to see if she could pull herself a guy out as well. :) - bosquederoble, Jun 6, 2017
The brawny guy losing a tug of war to her, maybe. Him getting pulled through a cooler shaped portal in space, why not. But her being at a party alone? I find that hard to believe :) - - jellonz, Jun 6, 2017
Since I think the setting is the US, I wonder if they are reaching down to New Zealand to get the guys. :) - bosquederoble, Jun 6, 2017
That would explain everything Bosque. She's super hot but just needs something a little more exotic. And, here in NZ, we regularly throw tug of wars and jump through portals just to impress girls :) - jellonz, Jun 7, 2017

La casa de mis abuelos se enfría una nevera de pantano, que es básicamente un ventilador soplando sobre un cubo de hielo.

My grandparent's house is cooled by a swamp cooler, which is basically a fan blowing over a bucket of ice.
