There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speakers suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

What is Mother of Pearl?

Mother of pearl, also called nacre, is an iridescent layer of material that forms the shell lining of many mollusks. Pearl oysters and abalone are both sources of this substance, which is widely used as an inlay in jewelry, furniture, and musical instruments. Mother of pearl comes in several natural colors, but is often bleached and dyed for decorative use. The dye retains the shimmering layers which make the material so sought after. Nacre is a tough and resilient material, but it is relatively soft and easily scratched.

Perfect English, amiga! :) - rac1, Jun 4, 2017
Porcu: You should eliminate "lo" before "a mí" With gustar, "it" is the subject of gustar. Gustaba = it pleased me / I liked it. Lo is a direct object pronoun, not a subject pronoun, and should not be used here. No subject pronoun is necessary. - DilKen, Jun 4, 2017

I never thought of using "mother of pearl" as an exclamation. Presumably it's a euphemism for "Mother of God!" - AnnRon, Jun 6, 2017

Kristen, I think in Spanish we need to use some word before a noun when it is the subject of the sentence. In this case...El azulejo.. - DilKen, Jun 4, 2017
Yes....I don't prefer it, but it is beautiful. :) - rac1, Jun 4, 2017

Como la palabra "nacre" se usa en crucigramas de inglés con regularidad, fue relativamente fácil aprender la palabra "nácar" cuando la aprendí hace unos pocos años.

As the word "nacre" is used in English-language crosswords regularly, it was relatively easy to learn the word "nácar" when I learned it a few years ago.

Si una pequeña fragmenta de grava se mete dentro la concha de una ostra, lentamente se cubre con la nácar y se convierte a una perla.

If a tiny piece of grit gets inside the shell of an oyster, slowly it becomes covered in nacre and becomes a pearl.
