veranear ( beh-rah-neh-AHR )

(verb) to spend the summer, to spend one's summer vacation

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speakers suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

"Veranear" es un verbo en inglés también, pero es un poco arcaico. Ej. Veraneábamos en Bélgica.

"To summer" is also a verb in English, but it is a little archaic. Eg. We used to summer in Belgium. enter image description here

We will often still use it mate , " where are you going to spend the summer holls " ? - ray76, May 29, 2017
I mean as a verb Ray. You've used it as an adj. with "spend" as the verb. In the old days, or maybe even still among the upper classes, it was/is used as a verb: I summer in Santorini, I winter in St. Moritz. - jellonz, May 29, 2017
Gracias Nepal. It is a fun pic. So old and yet so fresh :) - jellonz, May 29, 2017
Yes, I've heard that too. - rac1, May 29, 2017
"to lunch" is also in vogue now. :) - ian-hill, May 29, 2017

Con mi marido preferíamos veranear en las montañas a las playas.

With my husband we preferred to holiday in the mountains to the beaches.

This is a tricky English construction Porc. Better would be "preferred *holidaying* in the mountains to the beaches" or "preferred to holiday in the mountains *over/rather than* the beaches." - jellonz, May 29, 2017
I like the way it's said, Kat. The only thing I would change is "to the beaches in the mountains." - rac1, May 29, 2017
Or rather, "at the beaches in the mountains" is what I mean to say. :) - rac1, May 29, 2017
Amber: I think she means she prefers the mountains to the beaches. (rather than or instead of) - DilKen, May 29, 2017

Probablemente voy a veranear deseando que la lluvia se detenga. Parece que "el niño" ha abierto el grifo.

I will probably spend my summer wishing it would stop raining. It appears that "el niño" has turned on the tap.

Thanks, Ambette. The avatar probably won't last for long. I just wanted a summer theme for now. - Sassette, May 29, 2017
Sassy: I could be wrong on this, but I think when you qualify a noun with an adjective in Spanish, then you should use una. Soy una chica fresa. - DilKen, May 29, 2017
Note the following sentences from SD's page on use of indefinite articles: Soy profesora de español. Soy una profesora de español muy buena. - DilKen, May 29, 2017
@kenhuizenga Very interesting point. My thought was this: una would not be needed because I wasn't making a good/bad assesment like I'm a bad girl. But when I think about it the only thing that matters is that preppy is an adj. Thanks! - Sassette, May 29, 2017
Sassy: But maybe you A R E a bad girl. :) Not that there is anything wrong with that. :) - DilKen, May 29, 2017
@kenhuizenga. Oops. Wait a minute. In your example isn't Spanish an adj in Spanish professor? It seems that the only time you need an una is if I'm making some kind of assessment. - Sassette, May 29, 2017
@kenhuizenga. lol I'm bad and proud of it. :) - Sassette, May 29, 2017
Sassy: As I said before, I could be wrong about this, but I think the way it works is as follows: A professor of Spanish is a generic job title. As soon as you say a good Spanish Professor or a black Spanish Professor, etc. you are specifying what type - DilKen, May 29, 2017
of professor he is. You are "qualifying" the noun, differentiating him from other professors. I think this applies to most adjectives. Tú eres chica. Tú eres una chica fresa. Who knows? Maybe both are acceptable. - DilKen, May 29, 2017
@kenhuizenga. I see what you're saying. I'll keep the correction on there and if a native feels differently I'll make adjustments. Thanks so much, again, for your insight. - Sassette, May 29, 2017
And even though a Spanish professor seemingly differentiates him from other professors, there is also a job title: Spanish Professor, so this usually treated as a profession in itself hence no un. - DilKen, May 29, 2017

Correction to my above comment Ray: In the olden days, the upper class, and you :) That is the use of "summer" as a verb I was talking about. Perhaps it is used more widely than I had allowed for :) - jellonz, May 29, 2017
H jellonz, it is really a matter where we are talking about as you know English varies so much all over the world and also in a country . Melbourne was also very English- centric so we tend to use these phrases especially by old buggers like me . - ray76, May 29, 2017
No worries Ray. I can imagine Ian McKellan or Sean Connery using it this way, so that makes it pretty classy in my books :) - jellonz, May 29, 2017
Great pic! Are these the ones that wouldn't give you a key? lol Little do they know how active and independent you are, eh? :) - rac1, May 29, 2017
Yes they are Amber , I was freezing my lollies off that day in Ontario , it was near where he my son was born. - ray76, May 29, 2017
Ray: You seem to be missing "and I" and "y yo" in both languages. Without the "y yo" the Spanish verb would be venearon. - DilKen, May 29, 2017
It's quite posh to say 'we summer in Switzerland and winter in Morocco ' - jennysk, May 30, 2017

Si mucha gente le gusta ir allí para veranear, entonces prefiero ir a otro lugar.

If many people like to go spend the summer there, then I would prefer to go some place else.

De niño, veraneaba trabajando en la granja de mi padre. A veces, jugaba al béisbol después de las cinco de las tardes.

As a boy, I spent my summers working on my father's farm. Sometimes I played baseball after five o'clock in the evening.

Siempre veraneo en casa porque mi casa es en una isla y cerca del mar. Desafortunademente este lugar es muy popular por las vacaciones y entre las navidades y el fin de enero hay una multitud de turistas. La población aumenta muchas veces. Después, las escuelas comenzan otra vez y los turistas salen.
