"-er" and "-ir" verbs

I was looking at the conjugations of the two verb types and I discovered huge similarities between the two. The preterite tense is even identical for both! Does anyone know why?

The development of the language from its Latin roots is the subject of the study of etymology. A Google search into "etymology" of the Spanish language might yield some answers. All I know are the "whats" and just some of the "whys"
