"Las mujeres los leen"
I was on Duolingo and was asked to translate "The women read them." Why is it "los leen"? That doesn't even make sense.

It makes sense if you imagine that "them" refers to books or newspapers or anything that can be read that is masculine in Spanish. "Los" is the direct object pronoun, standing in for a masculine plural noun (books, etc.) and "leen" is the third person plural conjugation of "leer," to read. Las mujeres los leen = The women read them.
