Phrase: Um pues!

Phrase: Um pues!

I just had a question about this particular phrase. There are a lot of discussions online about the singular use of the word pues as a filler or Spanish equivalent of: um..., hmm..., or well... However, I often hear my Spanish speaking friends use the phrase "Um pues" as more of an exclamation. Like if they are saying "Really?!" to whoever they're speaking to. However, I know I could be totally off and just misinterpreting them. Any help as to what this phrase means would be great as I hear it often.

Thanks!

It is sort of like: "yeah, well." I don't use either the Spanish or the English expression much, but I have heard them. It's more common among teens and twenties, I believe, and some older folks without education.

Um, pues, like you know I hate it when someone gets "best answer" without giving others a chance participate. - Daniela2041, May 21, 2017

I agree, Dani but that's nearly always the questioner's fault for being too quick to choose best answer without giving people sufficient time to respond! - FELIZ77, May 21, 2017
