Using A and lo in a sentence.
Hello,
Why is A put in front of a sentence? For example, A la nina no le gusta zapatos rojo. or Al hombre le gusta golf.
Also, how do you know when to use lo in a sentence?

A is put before an indirect object which is needed with some verbs such as gustar and is used many other times when a person gives, receives, asks or demands something from another person.
Lo is a direct object pronoun which can mean him or it. There are many other reasons for "a's" and "lo's" in Spanish, but those are the most basic, which you need to learn for now. ![]()
I suggest you take the SD video course which you can find under the main menu under learning Spanish.
Here is an example of lo.
Juan dio el sombrero a Paula.
Juan gave a hat to Paula.
Juan lo dio a Paula.
Juan gave it to Paula.
Later on, you will learn how to say.
Juan le lo dio.
Juan se lo dio.
Juan gave it to her.
Note that I crossed out the sentence with le lo. Le is normally the indirect pronoun object for him or her: she (her) is the one who received the hat (hence she >>> her is the indirect object)
The rules of Spanish do not allow for two consecutive pronouns that start with the letter L. Therefore, le lo becomes se lo.
You'll learn these things, and much more as you progress through the video lessons. If you really want to learn, take the flashcard lessons after each video.
