soñoliento ( soh-nyoh-LYEHN-toh )

(adjective) sleepy, drowsy

Welcome to La Palabra Del Día

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speakers suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Jenny: Normally the gerundio is used w/ estar like this: está aburrido. (is bored) Is being bored is an infrequent construction (but the right way to say it in this case) I think the Spanish should be "es estar aburrido" - DilKen, May 15, 2017
I've seen this type of sentence before in a Spanish lesson. Instead of saying Tú eres un buen primo, they said Eso es ser un buen primo. (That's being a good cousin) Similar construction. - DilKen, May 15, 2017

This myth possibly arose as a way of explaining why Koalas sleep for up to 22 hours a day. They need more sleep than most animals because eucalyptus leaves contain toxins and are very low in nutrition and high in fibrous matter so they take a large amount - ray76, May 15, 2017
- of energy to digest. - ray76, May 15, 2017
The toxins don't help their state of mind, though 'mind' might be an exaggeration. - jennysk, May 15, 2017

Yes, it very well can mean that. :) - rac1, May 15, 2017
G'day mate , nice to see you again. - ray76, May 15, 2017
Languagenut: Very nice sentence. I think there is one small error. Visitar does not automatically take the preposition "a" unlike some verbs like ir. When visiting a person (the direct object) of visitar, we do use the "personal a" when the person... - DilKen, May 15, 2017
is known to us / identified...e.g. Señor Perez, su hijo, etc. When you say "un doctor" we're not thinking of a particular doctor, just any old doctor : In that case no "personal a" is used. - DilKen, May 15, 2017

Cuando era joven, no podía dormirme a menos que el entorno fuera favorable, no importaba qué tan soñoliento estuviera, pero con el tiempo he aprendido a dormirme en cualquier entorno, incluso en mi sillón en medio de una fiesta. Mi esposa ya no me permite sentarme en mi sillón durante una fiesta, pero supongo que el castigo podría ser peor.

When I was young, I could not fall asleep unless the surroundings were conducive, no matter how tired I was, but with time I have learned to fall asleep in any environment, including on my easy chair in the middle of a party. My wife no longer lets me sit in my easy chair during a party, but I suppose the punishment could be worse.

Bosque: I would have said el enterno estuviera favorable. What do you think is best? - DilKen, May 15, 2017
You got it right! jeje - rac1, May 15, 2017
Ken- I have always seen favorable with ser not estar. But I am a learner so I could be wrong. Maybe a native speaker will comment. :) - bosquederoble, May 15, 2017
I like the theme. - Sassette, May 15, 2017
No death penalty for the party pooper :-)! - Jraider, May 15, 2017
Bosque, after checking the dictionary, it seems you are right. It doesn't make sense to me yet, but that's not the first time. :)) - DilKen, May 15, 2017
That is why every time I answer a question regarding ser vs. estar I say it doesn't matter what you think is a defining characteristic and what is a condition, it only matters what natives think on that. :) - bosquederoble, May 15, 2017
JRaider, I have explained to my wife that keeping me alive is in her interest as long as I am working and putting money into the retirement fund. So we don't have to worry about her offing me until I am a financial drain. :) - bosquederoble, May 15, 2017
