Would you say la sierra de afganistán? Las montañas de afganistán? What sounds right to Spanish-speakers? Does it not really matter which one I use?

Las montañas afganas. A montaña is an individual mountain. Sierra is a mountain range or region.

Is "las montanas afganas" correct as well or do I have to include the "de"? - Ashanddust, May 14, 2017
If you use the adjective form - afganas there is no de, only with the noun form - DilKen, May 14, 2017
KenHuizenga is correct but I was able to point out the differences between montaña and sierra. - NKM1974, May 14, 2017

Las montañas afganas (adjective form)

The afghan mountains

Las montañas de Afganistán (joining two nouns, similar to possesive in English)

The mountains of Afghanistan

Afghanistan's mountains

or even "The Afghanistan mountains" (just like you could say the Chicago skyline.)
