anhelo ( ah-NEH-loh )

(noun) desire, longing

Welcome to La Palabra Del Día

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speakers suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Examples:

1: El pueblo de este país no ha perdido el anhelo por la paz.

The people of this nation have not abandoned their desire for peace.

2: Paco sintió anhelo por su niñez al ver el triciclo de sus hijos.

Paco felt a longing for his childhood when he saw his children's tricycle.

Parece que el anhelo de poder puede hacer cosas terribles en la mente de un ser humano.

It seems that the longing for power can do terrible things to the mind of a human being.

Absolutely. - rac1, May 11, 2017
Thank you Doc , I failed to see the subtle difference. - ray76, May 11, 2017
Thanks Ian old son. - ray76, May 11, 2017
Glad that you agree Amber . - ray76, May 11, 2017
I'm guessing these are some of your finest politicians. Right mate? - Jraider, May 11, 2017
Ray: Yes, Ray, the reason for the change is because, just like in English, this clause has a subject (you are longing for) so the word has to be the conjugated verb rather than the noun. I apologize if you already knew that but I wasn't sure :))) - DilKen, May 11, 2017
Or you may receive something you weren't expecting (but maybe should have been). - AnnRon, May 12, 2017
Thank you Ken I did not know , or had forgotten. - ray76, May 12, 2017
No J R I think that they are English politicians , need to ask Ian. - ray76, May 12, 2017

Ella ya no tenía un anhelo de vivir frente a una enfermedad mental que la atormentaba. El mes de mayo es un momento de reconocer el sufrimiento, dar esperanza y erradicar el dolor del rechazo y el estigma.

She no longer had a desire to live in the face of a mental illness that tormented her. The month of May is a time to recognize the suffering, provide hope, and erradicate the pain of rejection and stigma.

Thanks, Kenhuizenga, for corrections and explanation in the comment section. smile

I know they will make great strides in this line of medical research. :) - rac1, May 11, 2017
Good message Missy :-)! - Jraider, May 11, 2017
Sassette: I think in this case you need "de" before reconocer. This is necessary when an infinitive follows a noun or an adjective unless the infinitive is the subject of the sentence. I'll give you an example in my next comment. - DilKen, May 11, 2017
Es fácil aprender español. This could be rewritten as Aprender español es fácil. Do you see how "Aprender español" is the subject? Learning Spanish is easy. - DilKen, May 11, 2017
On the other hand: El español es facíl D E aprender. Here, El español is the subject, so the "de" is required. - DilKen, May 11, 2017
In your sentence you can see the "El mes de mayo" is the subject, right? - DilKen, May 11, 2017
Wow, thanks for the help kenhuizenga. Recently, I was thinking of asking a question on Q&A when to put de in front of an infinitive. Sometimes I have a feel of when to insert a "de," and other times I don't. :) - Sassette, May 11, 2017
Thanks Ambette & Crazy Cat. I hope they are making strides in research.:) - Sassette, May 11, 2017
Sassette: Until your Spanish "6th sense" is developed...try this. Can you insert "of" or "for" or "about" in English. For example, it it a time for recognizing. The Spanish infinitive and English -ing form are often very similar. - DilKen, May 11, 2017
@kenhuizenga. Will do. I keep notes on Spanish tips and I just added your technique. - Sassette, May 11, 2017
Sassette: You are always so grateful for my tips, I thought I'd share a little more so you can pull a couple of seemingly unrelated concepts together in your mind. :) - DilKen, May 11, 2017
You know how with two nouns in English, one can become an adjective of the other? The Chicago Bulls, for example. In Spanish this is los toros de Chicago, right? - DilKen, May 11, 2017
Putting de between a noun and an Spanish infinitive is just another example this. A Spanish infinitive acts like a noun grammatically. So "un momento de reconocer" is like saying in English "a recognition moment" Got it? - DilKen, May 11, 2017
Now all I have to do is read Ken's explanation every day for a month, and I will have internalized his lesson and will never, never, never make another error. Right? Well . . . - AnnRon, May 12, 2017
@kenhuizenga. I think I understand. The infinitive is a noun but it is acting as an adjective. So recognition is like Chicago in Chicago Bullls. Chicago says what kind of Bulls. Recognition is what kind of moments. I hope I got it. :) - Sassette, May 12, 2017
@AnnRon Yes, the pressure is on. If kenhuizenga is making this kind of effort I'm going to have to listen and improve. :) Of course, I hope nobody will get hard on me if I do goof again...and again. lol - Sassette, May 12, 2017

Todos nosotros tenemos un anhelo por algo, pero con frecuencia no sabemos cómo realizarlo y si lo logramos con frecuencia no resulta ser lo que esperábamos.

All of us have a longing for something, but frequently we don’t know how to accomplish it, and if we do achieve it frequently it does not turn out to be what we were expecting.
