There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speakers suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

The hyacinth is a reliable early bloomer.

That is blooming well early ! - ray76, May 8, 2017
Ann: it seems to me that antes de tiempo means early as in, he was supposed to be here at 5:00 but he arrived early. - DilKen, May 8, 2017
I would say ...en la primavera temprano, or perhaps even better.. a principios del primavera (or verano) - DilKen, May 8, 2017
Even in Alaska :-)! - Jraider, May 8, 2017
Ken, "planta que florece antes de tiempo" is the only equivalent for "early bloomer" given on wordreference.com. - AnnRon, May 8, 2017
Ann: I think they have a problem with this entry then. Doing a google search for florecen antes de tiempo brings up lots of articles about problems...climate change, etc. - DilKen, May 8, 2017
I think florecen antes de tiempo means blooming T O O early (before they should bloom) as when happens when it is unseasonably warm early in the year, then you get a frost, then the flowers die :((( - DilKen, May 8, 2017
Ken, that makes sense to me (the blooming too early interpretation). I even thought that when I saw it, but what do I know? I figured that site was (far more) reliable (than I), but maybe not. - AnnRon, May 12, 2017
They are very reliable. Perhaps there is more to learn about that. Now I'm really curious. :) - rac1, May 17, 2017

Nepal: I think you should use parecen or me parecen to keep with the plural jacintos. Also, De todos modos. You have an extra "de" - DilKen, May 8, 2017
Nepal: For me, after Til today, I would say H A D not seen. And in Spanish había visto. Without the "til today) it would be fine to say I have never seen. - DilKen, May 8, 2017
They bloom quickly, and the flowers don't last long :-)! - Jraider, May 8, 2017

NKM, very nice. I think you need El before jacinto since this is the subject of the sentence :) Spanish is different from English in this regard. - DilKen, May 8, 2017
Also, I think you need the plural in English..."Hyacinths are... " :-)! - Jraider, May 8, 2017
It's plural & correct. Thank you both! - NKM1974, May 8, 2017

El mensaje de las flores de los jacintos es;

The Hyacinth Flower’s Message Is:

Estar feliz y hacer el tiempo a jugar , pero no actúes precipitadamente; Esto puede conducir a profundos arrepentimientos.

Be happy and make time to play, but do not act rashly, as this can lead to deep regrets.

Derived from Greek legend about a young beautiful boy named Hyakinthos who was slain by Zephyr, the god of the west wind. Hyacinth is also derived from the word jacinth meaning a blue gemstone

The hyacinth flower is a lovely cool weather perennial plant formerly considered related to the lily and have now been placed in the family of asparagaceae. Growing wild in parts of Iran and Turkmenistan next to the Caspian Sea, these outstanding garden plants have evolved into a favorite of the spring garden. With many star shaped flowers per plant these flowers make a beautiful effect when planted in swaths and drifts of solid colors. They are available in the palest pinks to the deepest magenta. There are also some beautiful blues including a soft baby blue and a striking, deep indigo blue. This fragrant spring flower is also available in red, burgundy, orange, white, yellow, purple.

Thanks Ray for taking the time to post things like this, as you usually do. It's very informative, but also very interesting! :) - rac1, May 8, 2017
Nice Ray: I would use Ser and para jugar instead of a jugar. Try to avoid translating the "to" part of the English infinitive as "a" unless the Spanish verb requires it..Empezar a + infiinitive , ayudar a + infinitive for example. :) - DilKen, May 8, 2017
So they are related to asparagus? Interesting :-)! - Jraider, May 8, 2017
Ray: You might want to think of it this way. Ser feliz means be a happy person, estar feliz could mean act happy ... or Mr. sad person, try to be happy for a change :) - DilKen, May 8, 2017

Esteban: El jacinto (something needed before nouns when they are subjects) más bellas (can't use mucho to modify an adjective) cultivó (delete había) (If it wouldn't sound right to say had cultivated in English, don't do it in Spanish :) - DilKen, May 8, 2017
Sweet. Have a badge E :-)! - Jraider, May 8, 2017
[I appreciate the help offered by Ken] Still wondering about the best way to present the idea of continuous or routine cultivation: ha cultivado o cultivaba? (or something else: - )] - Esteban_317, May 8, 2017
Esteban: almost :) más with an accent. I agree with he cultivado if she is still alive. If she has passed on I would use the preterite. - DilKen, May 8, 2017
If the person is still living (and therefore connect with today) then he cultivado is perfect. If the person is dead then I think either the imperfect or preterite would be OK Normally when a time period is mentioned you use the preterite. - DilKen, May 8, 2017

Cuando cultivas bulbos como los jacintos, los narcisos, los tulipanes o los azafranes, es importante dejar quedar las hojas hasta que se marchiten para formar un buen bulbo nuevo para el siguiente año.

When you cultivate bulbs like hyacinths, daffodils, tulips or crocuses, it is important to let the leaves remain until they wither in order to form a good new bulb for the following year.

Pedro tenía tan malo resfriado que por más que trataba de oler los jacintos, no pudo.

Pedro had such a bad cold that no matter how hard he tried to smell the hyacinths, he couldn't.

Pedro tenía un resfriado tan fuerte que, por mucho que trataba de oler los jacintos, no pudo.

Pedro tenía un resfriado de modo que no pudo oler los jacintos, por más que intentaba de hacerlo.

Pedro had a cold so he couldn't smell the hyacinths no matter how much he tried.

I am not 100% positive about used the imperfect indicative of tratar here instead of the imperfect subjunctive. Sometimes, I think, when something was not done in the past one has to use the imperfect subjunctive. My thinking in this case is that it is a fact that he tried to do it and he failed...that's why I used imperfect indicative. What do you think?
