Is there a recommended format for learning Spanish?

I have been teaching myself Spanish for the past six weeks. I bought books on Spanish verbs, and vocabulary. I have cd's that I practice with, but I seem to bounce between the different media and I'm not sure exactly what I'm retaining.
I was wondering if anybody had any advice on learning Spanish. Perhaps there is a proven method or format that could be more useful than randomly practicing Spanish on different media.

Read in Spanish as much as you can, listen to a course cassette or cd and try to speak the language whenever you can: You can start here, in the forum. We're here to help each other... Try writing in Spanish instead of English. Good luck alex!

As you know many people have the same problem when they start out learning Spanish as well. As for myself I started out taking class in HS and continue in college. And some of the best advices I got was to travel to a Spanish country for a semester or two......or once you understand the Spanish language structure then you can try one of the language exchange program......using Skype.

muchas suerte

Alex find yourself an El Salvadorian woman to help you. I love my teacher for her kindness and understanding. Her patience with me and the consistance she displays with me. I am learning a lot.
