There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speakers suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

1: Las gallinas pasan todo el día picoteando el suelo.

The chickens spend the whole day pecking the ground.

2: Si sigues picoteando la comida, mamá se va a enojar.

If you keep picking at your food, Mom's going to get mad.

When I saw the word of the day, picotear, I wondered "Why does this word exist, because picar means the same thing." Apparently, I was not the only one who was confused, because some members have used the wrong word in their answers. Maybe we can blame "Google Translate" for that. smile After reading the definitions of both words, I have noticed that picar has about a hundred meanings while picotear has just a few. Let me think a sec. Which word should I use? Oy vey! I've already used them both.

That's interesting, Ken. Thank you for sharing with us. You know your Spanish way more than me. I just post what they choose, but they are using Spanish natives to put the word of the day together. So, I just do my best, but I'm thankful for members that - rac1, May 7, 2017

Amber: I have no problem with the word selection. I learned something from it. I just wanted to have some fun with it while practicing my Spanish. :) - DilKen, May 7, 2017
Yes, while searching about its use, I learned more too. :) - rac1, May 7, 2017
I agree with Amber. Your inisight is priceless here on SD as I learn a lot from your observations. - Sassette, May 7, 2017

Cuando yo era un niño a menudo sólo picoteaba mi comida porque odiaba grandes comidas, y mi apetito no era bueno.

Excepto con una comida que me gustó.

When I was a kid I often just pecked at my food because I hated big meals , and my appetite was not good.

Except with a meal that I liked.

kristen: from the SD dictionary: tomar gusto a algo = to take a liking to something (no de between tomar and gusto) Ha tomado gusto a .... (no n....not tomando) - DilKen, May 7, 2017

Mstivers: I almost always check your Spanish and I rarely find any problems. Your Spanish is very good :) Today, there is a little problem which is very commonly made by us English speakers. :) - DilKen, May 7, 2017
We can't use the gerundio - chismeando as an adjective in Spanish like we do in English. You can use chismosas here which is an adjective meaning gossiping. - DilKen, May 7, 2017
When no adjective exists in Spanish, we would have to say mujeres que chismean or mujeres que están chismeando - DilKen, May 7, 2017
It's true. lol - rac1, May 7, 2017
MstiversL I missed your other gerundio...picoteando...this should be changed as well. I don't know if they is an adjective for this. - DilKen, May 7, 2017
Mstivers: I should note that the gerundio can be use with a verb of perception such as ver or oír...I saw some birds pecking would be OK with the gerundio. - DilKen, May 7, 2017
mstivers is not perfect...I say this world is coming to an end. lol - Sassette, May 7, 2017
I wondered if I was using that correctly... thanks for the help! - mstivers, May 8, 2017

Siempre se dice que comer aparte des horas de la comida normal engorda y que hay que cuidarse cuando picoteas para no subir desmedidamente de peso.

It is always said that eating apart from the hours of the normal meal is fattening and that you have to be careful when you peck in order not to rise unnecessarily in weight.
