abalanzarse ( ah-bah-lahn-SAHR-seh )

(verb) to leap on, to rush

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speakers suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

I've always read "manifestantes" for protesters. A protest (as in the streets) is called "una manifestación." B T W, the SD translator agrees with me. - Daniela2041, Apr 30, 2017

Dani, I trust you before the SD dictionary. If you see a mistake on any of my posts, please make an edit for me. It seems work just gets too busy nowadays, and I might not catch it. Thank you. That is if you don't mind, of course. jeje - rac1, Apr 30, 2017

I see one now. It was horrific! - rac1, Apr 30, 2017
NKM: hacia el edificio. Toward the building. You don't want the "a el = al" in this case. Hacia is already the prepositiion of movement, so "a" would be like saying "towards to the building" - - DilKen, Apr 30, 2017

No sea demasiado rápido a abalanzarse y votar por el candidato popular.

Los tontos se abalanzan donde los ángeles temen pisar.

Do not be too quick to rush in and vote for the popular candidate.

Fools rush in where angels fear to tread .

I'm finding out you can't use abalanzó for jumped, or hopped. - rac1, Apr 30, 2017

The wave surged across the beach. Or should I say the tsunami surged across the beach? Well, let's check the chart!

La ola se abalanzó a través de la playa. ¿O debería decir la tsunami se abalanzó a través de la playa? ¡Bueno, vamos a revisar la gráfico!

There's a space between Republican and Wave. SD doesn't like locations with spaces. Sometimes, connecting them with an underline dash will fix the problem. - Daniela2041, Apr 30, 2017
Ok, thanks! - CarterTF, Apr 30, 2017
In my post, It says Republican%Wave, but that isn't appearing - CarterTF, Apr 30, 2017
I just settled for this picture, but the old one that I was trying to post actually classified them. - CarterTF, Apr 30, 2017
Nice Carter. debería decir - should I say. First verb conjugated, second in infintive. - DilKen, Apr 30, 2017
This photo is ok, Carter, but I think Dani's suggestion is a good one. You can also go to "tinyurl" that will fix it for you. - rac1, Apr 30, 2017

Los zombis se abalanzaron sobre el helicóptero y mostraron que nunca deberías creer que puedes estar por encima de todo.

Los alces pueden abalanzarse más alto que lo que podrías creer; a veces saltan vallas de ocho pies.
A veces cuando un alce trata a saltar por encima una valla, en lugar de eso se abalanza sobre la valla

Moose can leap higher than you might think; sometimes they clear eight-foot fences.
Sometimes when a moose tries to jump over a fence, it leaps onto a fence instead.

(Sorry about the gory picture.)

Mmh, if by "leap" you mean "jump" or "hop" then you shouldn't use "abalanzarse". The right thing to say woud be: "Los alces pueden saltar más alto de lo que pudieras creer..." - huglez, Apr 30, 2017
Oh dear, I didn't realize this word would cause so many problems. He is correct, Ann. - rac1, Apr 30, 2017
I'm sorry about that. - rac1, Apr 30, 2017
Well, it's the WOD, and we often stretch the applications a bit. I'm thinking of it as "launch themselves." I'm going to let it stand, but still send thanks to you, huglez, for your clarification. - AnnRon, Apr 30, 2017
