perezoso ( peh-reh-SOH-soh )

(adjective) lazy

Welcome to La Palabra Del Día

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speakers suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Examples:

1: No seas tan perezoso. ¡Ya ponte a trabajar!

Don't be so lazy. Get to work already!

2: Ay, mira ese pandita perezoso.

Aw, look at that lazy little panda.

Notes:

When used as a noun, this word means "lazybones" or "sloth" (the animal).

Nada parece más perezoso que un oso Koala.

Excepto un" perezoso".

Nothing appears more lazy than a Koala bear.

Except a sloth.

All the mods supporting each other...that's a beautiful thing. ♥ - Sassette, Apr 29, 2017
Sorry, don Ian, but "arrancar" only means "to boot" when speaking of "booting up" a computer. What you mean is "por añadidura." - Daniela2041, Apr 30, 2017
The same verb is used when talking about starting a car. "Dale cranque pa' que arranque." - Daniela2041, Apr 30, 2017

I had to force myself to get around to giving you a badge , yawn ! But you are worth it mate. - ray76, Apr 29, 2017
Esteban: I would use estar in both cases. This is just how he is behaving for awhile in both instances, not his nature / true self. - DilKen, Apr 29, 2017
It could be his nature to go back and forth between the two - but I appreciate the help and don't mind the edit : - ) which works to teach the general rule. If I was a little less lazy, I'd learn Spanish grammar better, like you & Bosque have... - Esteban_317, Apr 29, 2017

La persona que escrbió eso no es perezoso. Yo sé porque si fuera, él no se habría esforzado mucho para poner esa "b" extra en "habits."

The person who wrote that is not lazy. I know because if he were, he would not have gone to the effort of putting that extra "b" in "habits."

Ann: I think you should use él no se habría esforzado - the past participle goes with haber in the conditional perfect and the se needs to go before habría. - DilKen, Apr 29, 2017
Of course. Thank you, Ken. I have been very careless lately. - AnnRon, Apr 29, 2017

Los osos perezosos viven en la India, y comen termitas. No son perezosos y pueden correr más rápido que un ser humano- el nombre viene del hecho que la primera vez que se describieron el científico creía que eran emparentados con los perezosos de Ámerica debido a sus garras, pero poco después se reconocieron que son osos.

Sloth bears live in India and eat termites. They are not lazy and can run faster than a human being- the name comes from the first time that they were described the scientist thought that they were related to the sloths of America due to their claws, but shortly after it was recognized that they are bears.

Máximo no es perezoso, pero le gusta practicar "la flojera" de vez en cuando.

Max is not lazy but he can be a little lethargic at times.

(Icouldn't think of a better English expression for "practicar flojera." )
