"El primer día ERA intimidante" doesn't sound good at all.
"El primer día (the first day) just started and is definitively over in the past, that is why you should say:
"El primer día FUE intimidante".
To say "the first day was intimidating" in spanish, say "El primer día era intimidante."
Sorry it wasn't more evident. I do use question marks when it's a question, but I understand your need for clarification
