maullar ( mahw-YAHR )

(verb) to meow, to mew

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speakers suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

1: El gato macho vio a otro gato y empezó a maullar.

The tomcat saw another cat and started to meow.

2: Mi gata siempre se pone a maullar cuando abro una lata de atún.

My cat always starts mewing when I open up a can of tuna.

El gato maulló cuando el muchedumbre coreó "gato, gato, gato" durante su actuación de patinaje el año pasado en Manhattan.

The cat meowed when the crowd chanted "cat, cat, cat" during his skating performance in Manhattan last year.

201286, podía may be OK here, but I would use no pude (preterite) since you mention a time period (all night) and you are indicating that you tried, but failed, to sleep. - DilKen, Apr 24, 2017
Thank you for your recommendation Kenhuizenga, I am agreed! :) - 201286, Apr 26, 2017

Viendo este cartel, veo que la voz de Antonio Banderas actúa en la película , creo que el actor no maúlla sino habla durante la representación.

Watching this poster, I see that the voice of Antonio Banderas acts in the film, I believe that the actor doesn't meow but speaks during the performance.

I hear in "cat language" when they meow, it means everything.

Escucho en "el idioma de los gatos" cuando ellos maullan, lo significa todo.

Ok, thanks for all the help ken! - CarterTF, Apr 24, 2017
Carter: I don't think we can use eschuchar this way in Spanish. How about: Por lo que he oído (from what I've heard) of you could say "Dicen que..." They (impersonal...don't use ellos) say that.... - DilKen, Apr 24, 2017

Dicen que algunas niñas empezan maullar como un gato cuando están celosas.

They say some girls start to meow like a cat when they are jealous.

Creo que los gatos maúllan cuando quieren algo y ronronean cuando están felices.

I think cats mew when they want something and purr when they are happy.

La mayoría de los gatos maúllan para conseguir la atención, pero se puede interpretar mejor lo que están pensando observando su lenguaje corporal.

Most cats meow to get attention, but you can better interpret what they are thinking by observing their body language.

Dicen que los perros están diciendo "¡oye, mírame!" cuando ladran. ¿Me pregunto qué dicen los gatos cuando maúllan? Quizas quieran decir "Es mejor que no te olvides, yo soy tu dueño." LOL

They say that dogs are saying "Hey, look at me!" when they bark. I wonder what cats are saying when they meow? Maybe they mean "You better not forget, I own you." LOL
