colibrí ( koh-lee-BREE )

(noun) hummingbird

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speakers suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

How to post a picture

Examples:

1: ¡Mira! ¡Hay un colibrí en el jardín!

Look! There's a hummingbird in the garden!

2: Mi mamá hizo un bebedero para los colibríes.

My mom made a feeder for the hummingbirds.

Notes

In Spanish, a hummingbird can also be called a "picaflor" or a "chupaflor."

Según el enciclipedia libre los calibríes tienen otros nombres en español tal como: quindes, tucusitos, picaflores, chupamirtos, chuparrosas. Me gustan algunos de estos nombres porque son muy descriptivos. Por ejemplo: picaflores significa una cosa que pica flores y chuparrosa significa algo que chupa rosas. Tambien se llaman zumbadores, pájaros moscas y pájaros mosquitos.

According to the free encyclopedia, hummingbirds have other names in Spanish such as quindes, tucusitos, picaflores, chupamirtos, y chuparosas. I like some of these names because they are very descriptive. For example: picafloras means a thing that pecks at flowers and chuparosas means something that sucks roses. They are also called buzzers/hummers/whizzers, fly birds and mosquito birds.

Los colibríes eran ubicuos en Cuenca cuando mi esposo y yo estábamos allí. Se cernían en el comedero afuera de nuestra ventana por la mañana, la mediodía y la tarde.

Hummingbirds were ubiquitous in Cuenca when my husband and I were there. They hovered at the feeder outside our window morning, noon, and evening.

(I have some photos we took, but I don't have them uploaded to a site from which I can post them. The pictured bird is one that is native to Ecuador.)

Hace mucho mi esposa me preguntó si debías comprar un comedero para los colibrís. Le dije que les iba a cultivar comederos naturales, lo que hice, y ahora nos divierten teniendo batallas para nuestro jardín.

A long time ago my wife asked me if we ought to buy a hummingbird feeder. I told her that I would cultivate natural feeders for them, which I did, and now they entertain us having battles for our garden.

The fast rate at which the hummingbird flaps it's wings makes the humming sound.

La tarifa rápido en el cuál el colibrí bate su alas hace el sonido de tarareo.
