when does home mean hogar
Casa vs hogar: to translate "There is no place like home" is it incorrect to say, "No hay nada como hogar"? Or is "No hay nada como casa" correct? It seems that home doesn't always translate to hogar.

It is the same in the Spanish as it is in English. A house is an architectural feature, but a home is spiritual thing. I don't know if I expressed myself correctly.A "casa" is a bunch of rooms. An "hogar" is family, memories, the house where you grew up, the house where you live with your spouse (lovingly); it's a feeling. "A house is not a home" is an appropriate saying.
Be careful, The word "CASA" is often used following the preposition "EN" and in this case it doesn't mean "a bunch of rooms". "EN CASA" translates "AT HOME"
Examples:
Esta comida me hace sentir en casa. = this food makes feel at home.
Los niños sufren muchos cuando hay problemas en casa. = Kids suffer a lot when there are problems at home.
