libélula ( lee-BEH-loo-lah )

(noun) dragonfly

Welcome to La Palabra Del Día

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speakers suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

Examples:

1: Una libélula se me acercó y se cernía en frente de mi nariz.

A dragonfly flew over to me and hovered in front of my nose.

2: Hay dos libélulas azules bailando en el aire sobre el estanque.

There are two blue dragonflies dancing in the air above the pond.

¿Cuánta distancia hay entre Disneylandia Y Knott's Berry Farm? Oh--unos once kilómetros a vuelo de libélula.

How far is it from Disnehland to Knott's Berry Farm? Oh---some eleven kilometers as the dragon files

(The pun "flies" OK in English)

La libélula puede ver en todas direcciones a la vez, y puede volar hacia atrás o flotar como un colibrí. enter image description here

The dragonfly can see in all directions at once, enter image description here and can fly backwards or hover like a hummingbird.

Lo mejor cosa de una libélula es que no muerden;

Bueno, espero que no .

The best thing about a dragonfly is that they do not bite;

Well , I hope that they do not .

The "leg" of an insect or animal in Spanisn is "pata." - Daniela2041, Apr 16, 2017
I didn't know that, they must use their legs for eating. :) - rac1, Apr 16, 2017
Thanks, Dani. I wondered about "pierna"—didn't seem quite right— but didn't take the time to check. I should always check. :-) - AnnRon, Apr 16, 2017
Pierna is for human. Whilst, pata is for animal & furniture. - NKM1974, Apr 16, 2017

Tenía un amigo a que le gusta sacar fotos de las libélulas. El solía atraparlas y ponerlas en la nevera por un rato corto, para hacerlas inmovíl, entonces sacó la foto. Cuando se calentó la libélula voló lejos.

I had a friend who liked to take photos of dragonflies. He used to catch them and put them in the refrigerator for a short while to immobilise them, then he took the photo. When it warmed up the dragonfly flew away.

Dragonflies lay their eggs on a harvest field. Las libélulas desovan sus huevos en un campo de cosecha.

Typo on my part "libélulas." I didn't catch the second "l" --typing too fast. - Daniela2041, Apr 16, 2017
I saw it on a BBC documentary about Japanese landscape. I double-check my entries for errors. - NKM1974, Apr 16, 2017

Did anyone make fused glass dragonflies when they were in school?

¿Cualquiera hizo libélulas de vitrofusión cuándo ellos fueron en la escuela?

I think it would be, "fuse".... :) - rac1, Apr 16, 2017
So worded like this, "Did anyone make fuse glass dragonflies when they were in school?" - CarterTF, Apr 16, 2017
Fused seems correct to me, past participle as adjective, did anyone make fused, or did anyone fuse... :) - bosquederoble, Apr 16, 2017
Yes, Bosque is correct. Now I understand. I wasn't sure just what it was called. - rac1, Apr 16, 2017
Ok, thanks - CarterTF, Apr 17, 2017

Mi esposa no tiene miedo a los insectos, sólo a las criaturas que tienen ocho patas, pero una de sus amigas tiene mucho miedo a las libélulas. Sospecho que no le gustaría encontrar algunas de las libélulas del pasado, las cuales eran más grandes que los de hoy.

My wife is not afraid of insects, only those creatures that have eight legs, but one her friends is very afraid of dragonflies. I suspect that she would not like to find some of the dragonflies from the past, which were bigger than those of today.

They look so fierce I was afraid of them as a child, but I learned that they are harmless. - Daniela2041, Apr 16, 2017
My goodness, I didn't know they grew to be that big. :) - rac1, Apr 16, 2017
They don't any more. The use of Malpighian tubules as a means of respiration limits insect size, the atmosphere once had more oxygen, allowing insects to be bigger. :) - bosquederoble, Apr 16, 2017
You know, I hadn't thought about it, but that makes perfect sense and for other creatures as well. - rac1, Apr 16, 2017
Also, it wasn't as contaminated, if at all. - rac1, Apr 16, 2017
