Don indicated, correctly, that in Spanish the present subjunctive is used in this case to indicate uncertainty. My comments below will (hopefully) show you that the subjunctive is also used in many situations where there is no uncertainty.

For example:

Me alegro de que hayas venido.

I'm happy that you have come.

In this case, there is no uncertainty that you have come. You're right here in front of me! The subjunctive in this case is because I am expressing an emotion. The idea here is that I am not declaring that you have come. You already know that! When you combine an emotional reaction with a known fact you use the subjunctive to express the known fact.

Here's another example:

Es lógico que la tierra sea redonda.

It is logical that the earth is round.

Now everybody knows the earth is round. But you are expressing an opinion about this fact, not declaring that the earth is round. Interestingly, however, if you say:

Pienso que la tierra es redonda.

I think the earth is round.

OR

Yo sé que la tierra es redonda.

I know that the earth is round.

Then you use the indicative. In order to get the subjunctive / indicative thing right (at least most of the time) it is helpful to review lists of verbs and phrases that require one or the other and also understand that in some cases either can be used with sometimes a very subtle change in meaning.

Es "estés" porque lo de "Espero" implica incertidumbre.

"I hope you are well"-"Espero que estés bien."

Sometimes, in English, "Expect" can mean "To be sure". In that case it would be "estás". I mean American English, maybe British. "I expect you to be here at 14:00" is definitely "estés (tú). "I expect that you were here here yesterday" is "Pienso que estabas ayer." "Expect" in that sense is "presumir". So...maybe it is subjunctive.

So, what is the difference between:

"Pensaba que estabas ayer." "Presumo que estabas ayer." Pensé que estabas ayer." (en este momento se me ocurre la idea)

The subjunctive is used to express desires, doubts, the unknown, the abstract, and emotions.

according to this article

"Esperar" ("to wait") is a verb that expresses desires, so we need subjunctive here
