Practicing time phrases in the past
Sorry for the long post. This was my homework assignment for today. I have written the Spanish in two and sometimes three ways. If someone can take a look at a few of these and tell me if some of them are wrong, I would appreciate it. Thanks. I placed the numbers in front of each sentence to make it easier for you to refer to them if you wish. You can ignore the fact that I overused the word "yo" I did that to get the right English translation in Google Translate as I typed in the Spanish. I have now made corrections based on input from LuisCache and Polenta. Thanks to both. ![]()

35 Cuando Lidia murió, hacía diez años que se había retirado.*
36 When Lidia died, she had already been retired for ten years.
40 Ha muerto Lolo. Había estado enfermo desde que era joven.

67 Yo llevaba seis meses preparándoME para el maratón.
68 Yo había estado seis meses preparándoME para el maratón.
(Suena más natural si pones el complemento circunstancial, seis meses, después del verbo: yo llevaba seis meses...; desde hacía seis meses, yo...)
69 I had been preparing for the marathon for six months.
Una forma muy común es usar el verbo hacer + periodo de tiempo + oración subordinada (que yo no hacía tal o que no iba a tal...):
Ejemplo:
He vuelto a estudiar chino. Hacía más de un año que NO iba a clases.
73 I am studying Chinese again. It had been more than a year since I had gone to class.
Astounding! Congratulations!
Number 2 sounds weird. 6 sounds a little unnatural. The use of FOR and its counterpart POR in Spanish is not common. I prefer nothing or if not DURANTE. 10 is definitely awful.14 unnatural. 17 and 18 sound ok to a Spanish-speaking native alhough there could be a grammar rule that I don't know. 21 could be Esta librería EXISTE desde que acabó la guerra. 22 could be but I know there is a difference between Spain and Latin America. I could have used it but I'm not sure about other countries especially Spain.26 is a little confusing. Mis hermanos ya no se hablaban antes de que muriera mi padre.29 is ok but I would use ENFERMARSE. Cuando me enfermé,....... The other sounds less Ok.47 and 48 could be ok.
I think the problem is that in Spanish the problem of something beginning in the past and continuing up to the present as in the PRESENT PERFECT or continuing up to a certain point of time in the past (PAST PERFECT ) is not AS IMPORTANT AS it is in English. We don't use all these things so much. Think of how we, Spanish speakers make such a difference between imperfecto and pretérito and English speakers think we must be crazy. LOL
