retumbar ( rreh-toom-BAHR )

(verb) to boom, to crash, to resound

Welcome to La Palabra Del Día

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speakers suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

El sonido del artefacto explosivo improvisado que tomó su pierna en Iraq retumbaría en su mente para siempre, pero no iba a hacer que no funcionara bien en la sociedad- en vez de eso iba a tener éxito.

The sound of the improvised explosive device that took his leg in Iraq would resonate en in his mind forever, but it was not going to make him not function well in society- instead he was going to have success.

Bosque great post. Only question I have is: conditional or future in Spanish? "Would" is used for lots of things other than conditionality. Would you agree that the sentence would mean with same in English if you replace would with will? - DilKen, Mar 25, 2017
Not that I;m suggesting that you do so. I just ask for you to consider this when thinking about the best Spanish tense. :) - DilKen, Mar 25, 2017
The form that would match my meaning would be "iba a retumbar" which I almost used but didn't want to use twice. My understanding, which could always be mistaken, is that in this case iba a retumbar could be replaced with retumbaría... - bosquederoble, Mar 25, 2017
...and still be quite natural in this case. I would have put was going to resonate in English if I had kept that. Thanks for the thoughts. :) - bosquederoble, Mar 25, 2017
I am talking about a future that has already happened from the perspective of a point in the past. :) - bosquederoble, Mar 25, 2017
Bosque: thanks for sharing your thinking. You've got me thinking more about it, that's for sure :) - DilKen, Mar 25, 2017

Yo oí el trueno retumbando en la distáncia. Imediatamente buscé busqué resgardo. Me encanta cuando puedo usar "la palabra del día" desde unos pocos días antes.

I heard the thunder rumbling in the distance. I immediately searched for shelter. I love it when I can use the "word of the day" from a few days ago. smile

Missy You want a different word to translate as here :) - DilKen, Mar 25, 2017
Lol Did you do this? Great work! - rac1, Mar 25, 2017
Thanks, Ken and Ambette. Yes, I did the project. I could've easily used a picture of my own but I didn't have any of clouds so I got a nice online photo of clouds. - Sassette, Mar 25, 2017
Missy: I think my first message was not clear enough :( I think you want to say durante or mientras instead of como to translate "as" in English in this case. See the dictionary for "as" on SD. - DilKen, Mar 25, 2017

En inglés, usamos dos palabras distintas para describir el sonido del bombo y platillo (boom y crash); pero en español ambos retumban.

In English, we use two different words to describe the sound of the bass drum and the cymbal (boom and crash), but in Spanish they both boom (retumbar).

Hi amiga... I would say, "boomed differently in a mass than they would in a fire"....... Otherwise it sounds like you are saying a mass is a misfortune. lol I'm sure for some it might be, but I don't think that's what you were trying to say. :) - rac1, Mar 25, 2017

If you drop a plate, it will crash, but not boom, even though the words are synonyms.

Si deja caer un plato, retumbá, pero no retumba, a pesar de que las palabras son sinónimos.

Hunter, the verb escuchar is not followed by "a" or any other preposition. Also, I think you need either to say "the bombs THAT rumbled" when constructing your Spanish sentence. Get my drift? - DilKen, Mar 25, 2017
Hunter: Here is a phrase from the SD dictionary: me da miedo conducir. Do you think you want the "de" after miedo? - DilKen, Mar 25, 2017
I would have been too. - rac1, Mar 25, 2017
"retumbando" - mstivers, Mar 25, 2017
mstivers: yes, that is another possibilty, which is what I used in my post. The gerund can only be used to modify an object in a case such as this where a "verb of perception" is used such as ver, oír, eschuchar, sentir, etc. - DilKen, Mar 25, 2017
There is also an adjective = retumbantes which, if used, would translate to "listening to the rumbling bombs in the distance" - DilKen, Mar 25, 2017
I hope I never have that experience :-)! - Jraider, Mar 25, 2017
