How can you translate into spanish the saying "I had to put my dog to sleep" when you confront the difficult situation of having to euthanize your pet?

Thanks to all that answered. I think the best translation will be "sacrificar". Still, I think the translation could be improve. Thanks. - beagscos, Mar 23, 2017

We many times use the verb sacrificar. Tuve que sacrificar a mi perro.

Tuve que eutanizar a mi perro. I know it's not in the RAE, and that "sacrificar" is the word preferred by many. I guess I'm becoming muy gringa in my thinking and "eutanizar" is seemingly lifting an animal to a human position.

I'll give it a try. Hopefully you'll get a better answer from a native speaker.

Tuve que pedir que mi veterinario matara a mi perro y le quitara su miseria.

I had to ask my veterinarian to kill my dog to get him out of his misery.

I read the link that NKM1974 posted and I like some of those answers better. Better to avoid the word kill (matar) in such a situation. - DilKen, Mar 23, 2017
kenhuizenga, thank you I was looking for the word euthanize in Spanish & the result is sacrificar. - NKM1974, Mar 24, 2017
