resguardar ( rrehs-gwahr-DAHR )

(verb) to shelter, to shield, to protect

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. For the Spanish sentences, edit your posts according to the native Spanish speakers suggestions. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Please keep political, religious or personal statements to a minimum. This is a practice game.

1: Los acantilados que resguardan la bahía están llenos de cuevas.

The cliffs that protect the bay are full of caves.

2: La cueva resguarda cientos de murciélagos.

The cave shelters hundreds of bats.

Original post with a major error:
Este letrero, que cuelga debajo de una palapa, advierte visitantes resguardar sus pertenencias, porque los guardaparques no son responsables en caso de que algún objecto esté perdido.

Revised post
Este letrero, que cuelga debajo de una palapa, les advierte a visitantes que resguarden sus pertenencias, porque los guardaparques no son responsables en caso de que algún objecto esté perdido.

Common and acceptable English usage:
This sign, which hangs under a grass roof, warns visitors to safeguard their belongings because the park rangers are not responsible in case some object is lost.

Rewritten English to demonstrate how to think in Spanish:
This sign, which hangs under a grass roof, warns visitors that they might safeguard their belongings because the park rangers are not responsible in case some object is lost.

I put the "might" in the above sentence to mimic the use and meaning of the subjunctive in Spanish, which needs to be used for suggestions, orders, etc. Advertir is one such verb. And yes, I thought of this correction by myself, but I decided to show the original version as well as the revised version to possibly help others learn.

The basic rule in effect here it that when I got to the verb resguadar, I had a change in subject. The sign was the first subject, and visitors was the second subject. Therefore, it was wrong to use the Spanish infinitive as I did in the original post, even though this is the way we would do it in English.

We must all be more responsible and accountable for our actions ,and what you carry into the bush you carry back out again , do not leave an ugly footprint. Good post mate. - ray76, Mar 22, 2017
Good pt. Ken, - he may find religion in this crisis & change essence, but I opted for the change in verb ...Thanks. - Esteban_317, Mar 22, 2017
People are prone to do that anyway, but it's a good idea to hang the sign. - rac1, Mar 22, 2017
Ha - I answered your question about my post by accident on your post.up above. gotta watch what I'm doing a bit better... - Esteban_317, Mar 23, 2017

Hace mucho, alguna gente batallaba con osos de los cavernas para controlar un lugar bueno para resguardarse de los fríos inviernos de la edad de hielo- me pregunto quién triunfó últimamente en esta lucha. Como dicen en la segunda imagen, la primera especie de muchas.

Along A long time ago, people used to battle with cave bears in order to control a good place to take shelter from the cold winters of the ice age- I wonder who ultimately succeeded in this struggle. Like they say in the second image, the first species of many.

A typo, bosque: ultimate which needs to be ultimately.. - Sassette, Mar 22, 2017
Good eye, Sassy. I was just about to say that. lol I'm sure Bosque appreciates any corrections. - rac1, Mar 22, 2017
Thsnks, Missy and Rac. :) - bosquederoble, Mar 22, 2017
Bosque: Don't you need to say LA gente? (because it is the subject of the sentence) - DilKen, Mar 22, 2017
I did not mean to make it universal, but your point is taken, so I will add alguna. :) - bosquederoble, Mar 22, 2017
Yes, I was going to mention that you could use alguna or mucha, or a few other qualifiers, but I knew you that you know that.:) - DilKen, Mar 22, 2017
Thanks. :) - bosquederoble, Mar 22, 2017
I am not sure that the first extinction helped by humans was the cave bear though, as the Australian Megafauna extinction for example was probably earlier. :) - bosquederoble, Mar 23, 2017

Esteban: did you consider using estar here instead of ser. He's looking for the temporary condition of being safe, not a change in his essence. I'm not sure which is right. Maybe either is OK. - DilKen, Mar 22, 2017
This looks like a scary situation. - rac1, Mar 22, 2017
Esteban: An easier way to say this might be: Estaba buscando resguardo durante la tormenta. (He was looking for shelter during the storm) - DilKen, Mar 22, 2017
No doubt Ken, but the inspiration for me involved a lyric from a song ♫, "a shelter in (the) time of storm." - I referenced my thought a bit more yesterday (inadvertently: - ) under your post. - Esteban_317, Mar 23, 2017

Hola Ray: I think you should use protegemos, the indicative, instead of the subjunctive here. Creer, when positive, is always followed by the indicative. :) - - DilKen, Mar 22, 2017
I knew that Ken and had it to start with but changed hopinh I could get away with WOD ,I am not home so will need more time to change again, thanks mate.. - ray76, Mar 22, 2017
Thank you Ken for being patient with me , it takes me a while but I finally get it. - ray76, Mar 22, 2017
I suppose so but I like the idea of protecting children. :) - Sassette, Mar 22, 2017
Children learn by watching and listening to adults. Great post! - rac1, Mar 22, 2017
Sassette , the idea is not have children unprotected , but not to have them overly protected to the point where they cannot function independently and are not exposed to the natural germs of life. - ray76, Mar 22, 2017
Ray: I saw your post last night and I didn't say anything because I figured you typed it on a phone using your gigantic paws. :) - DilKen, Mar 22, 2017
I see your point, Ray. :) - Sassette, Mar 22, 2017
