¿Por qué se celebra el día de San Patricio?
El 17 de marzo se celebra el día de san Patricio, patrón de Irlanda. San Patricio nació en el 387 en Kilpatrick, cerca de Dumbarton, en Escocia. Su padre era oficial del ejército romano. Piratas irlandeses tomaron prisionero al joven Patricio de 16 años y lo vendieron como esclavo.
Pasó seis años en Irlanda, donde aprendió a hablar el idioma celta. Consiguió fugarse y se marchó a Francia para prepararse para la vida monástica, y se ordenó sacerdote. Cuando contaba con 46 años de edad decidió volver a Irlanda para evangelizar a sus habitantes. Y allí permaneció casi tres décadas, hasta su muerte el 17 de marzo del año 461.
Una tradición cristiana dice que Patricio explicaba el misterio de la Santísima Trinidad usando un trébol de tres hojas. Por eso ese día se ha instaurado como costumbre llevar un trébol en la celebración de su festividad. También es habitual vestirse de color verde e incluso teñir con este color la cerveza en honor a Irlanda, también apodada la "Isla Esmeralda".
Why do we celebrate St. Patrick's Day?
On March 17 we celebrate the Day of St. Patrick, patron saint of Ireland. Saint Patrick was born in the year 387 in Kilpatrick, near Dumbarton in Scotland. His father was an officer in the Roman army. Irish Pirates took the young Patrick captive at 16 years of age and was sold as a slave.
He spent six years in Ireland where he learned to speak the Celtic language. He managed to escape and flee and went to France to prepare for monastic life, and was ordained a priest. When he was about 46 years of age he decided to return to Ireland to evangelize (convert) its inhabitants. And there he remained almost three decades until his death on March 17, in the year 461.
A Christian tradition has it that Patrick explained the mystery of the Most Holy Trinity using a shamrock of three leaves, so that's why on this day we have the custom of wearing a shamrock in celebration of this festivity. There also exists the custom of wearing green and also coloring beer green in honor of Ireland also nicknamed "The Emerald Isle."
